Player Discussion Claude Giroux

Depending on how the rest of the year goes I think one year at $4 is a fair deal. 3 or 4 isn't going to make or break anything else and he's a guy that's respected, came here when the Sens were at their WORST when literally nobody else decent would. And if you save $4m on Giroux what does $4m in FA get you? David Perron? I don't think you are getting a great top 6 forward in FA at $4M/year.

IMO it'd just be classless to low ball unless he falls off a cliff to Hamonic levels.

The previous times they tried to do this they got Dadynov at $5M, Tarasenko $5M, Perron $4M.

Senko got 55 points his year with Sens, Dadynov has been 40ish point guy post Sens signing. Perron hasn't played.

Claude is on pace for about 55 and brings more to the table elsewhere than the above guys.

I'd give him 2 x $5mill. He does a lot more for this team than we realize.

Giroux got 6.5 x 3 if we’re comparing to Dadonov and Tarasenko. He is about to be 37 years old, those guys were significantly younger.

We just have to consider that Giroux’s play can drop off a cliff at any moment now. Although he’s had ups and downs this year, I would easily pay 4 million for him if I knew he’d maintain this level of play. I don’t think you can assume that given his age. There’s just as good a chance we have to healthy scratch him some nights next year as there is he maintains his play.

We’ll see how the rest of the season goes first, but I do like the idea of a contract with bonuses. Probably ends up being the most fair route for everyone.

As a Flyer fan, I am very happy to see the Sens vault into a playoff spot with a win streak, and hopefully, they'll compete for one through to the very end of the season.

I have watched less Sens games this year than any of the previous few. So I hope G is still delivering his unique brand of hockey ability at a high level....he is an all-zones, all-situations savant when he's at his best.

And yes...Ottawa can likely get him at just about any price and term they like...he seems very very unlikely to test his fortunes with any other team, as long as the offers are not ridiculous. Bonuses are a reasonable path, if the Sens cap can accomodate them. But I think he's yours to keep...he contributes still, right?

He'll probably simply want to play, and play for the Cup i/e on a etams that has the chance, as long as he can. He's never gotten any real satisfaction from his NHL playing days for all the skill he brought, and for such a great player, who puts his all into his on-ice play...well, as I said, I think he plays for Ottawa as long as he's effective in the role he's given, and that could be quite a few years. Salary is probably well besides the point for a Hearst boy by now.

Norris credits Giroux for helping improve his face-offs. I am sure Giroux will help Stü too in this regard. Giroux adds more to this team than just offensive output and I hope that he considers sticking around at a resonable price so we can give him some long playoff runs.

He’s not going anywhere. I think 4M is more than enough to get it done. If you want AAV down you could do a 3 year deal at 5-3-1.

Yes he's a beast on the dot, but bloody hell does the Claudefather look slower and slower every game.

On the brightside, extending him is looking more and more affordable.

G is a 3rd line player now. In the same mold as a guy like Perron but better. A guy who can give you some quality minutes and gives it his all every shift. He’s not a top 6 player anymore based on his play this season.

You look at next year and with Perron, Greig, Pinto/Norris, Ostapchuk, Amadio, Gregor(?RFA) in the bottom 6 and I question whether we should re-sign him. We need 2 clear top 6 guys to slot in for next year and give some much needed boost to the top 6.

Signing Perron looks to me like it was a mistake. We may not have the cap space to fill needs and keep Giroux. I would not be surprised if we are forced to let him walk if we want to actually fill the holes through trades or signings.

We have too many slow players on the team too. I’m sure Staios didn’t anticipate this is how it would’ve turned out but it’ll be a problem.

Giroux should be what we wanted Perron to be. A great veteran 3rd liner who will get us 40 odd points with impeccable leadership and keep the young guys in check.

Our 3rd line next year should be:

Giroux-Pinto-Greig
Cousins/Faster option-Ostapchuk-Amadio

Giroux leads our forwards in giveaways this season. Stutzle is next in giveaways at forward.
If Giroux comes back $3million for 1 season and offer him a job when he retires with the team.

His play this year could be silver lining as we will very likely get him for cheap next year and keep him on the team and he'll still show signs of great play, imo.

That's 3.5-4 million we can spend on a winger for Stutzle. More when you consider us moving on from Perron and others that Staios will no doubt accomplish.

We have 3 first liners, 2 middle six forwards (Norris and Giroux) and 2 third liners (Pinto and Greig), that's it.

Of course we have a hard time scoring goals. Would have to stack the first line and sacrifice defense to score some goals.
