Look at the supporting cast.

Lefebvre is not alone behind the bench. There is a guy names Stephan Lebeau who burned the AHL back then and was a good point producer for a couple of seasons in Montreal, even helping to win our last Cup. The guy know a couple of things about offensive.
Their supporting cast wasn't that bad last year. Blunden, Tarnasky, Dumont are solid AHLers who bring grit. St-Pierre is or was a star at the AHL level for many years. They had Leblanc who didn't look out of place at the NHL level this season, same for Holland. Thomas had 19 goals in his rookie season on an offensively deprived team, yet that was no progression here although the Bulldogs have the tools to have a good PP.

When you have Pateryn (point shot), Beaulieu (QB), Blunden (screen), Andrighetto/St-Pierre (playmaker) and Thomas (shot), you should be able to have at least a decent PP but that wasn't the case and that's unforgivable. Thomas scored 50 goals in the OHL and has an NHL calibre one-timer/wrist shot. Already there that should be easy enough to think of plays.

The fact that Lebeau was a succesful player is irrelevant to the merits of a coach. The Greatest hockey player to ever live was a lousy coach, hell most excellent coaches were fringe NHLers or career AHLers (Bruce Boudreau, Peter Laviolette, Jacques Martin, Barry Trotz, etc.), when you finish at the bottom in consecutive years, you're part of the problem.

Can we agree to disagree ?

It was just a bad team with lots of very young players (some with very limited talent) and too many subpar vets.

Bergevin would not keep Lefebvre in place (as well as Dufresne or Lebeau) if he was feeling they make a crappy job. Sorry.

With Gio & Briere out he might get more of a look at camp but as mentioned earlier if Kristo had to be moved would've preferred a draft pick over Thomas

Thomas is not getting a sniff of the NHL roster next season, sorry.

He was simply awful last season. Ill give him another yrar before saying hes a bust but he needs to do a complete 180 this year.

Just never seemed to get on track or click with anyone on the dogs. Thats as much his fault as others though. He needs to be willing to drive the net like he did with hartford (ahl) but didn't last year. Guy his size needs to just be fearleas like gallagher or its not gonna happen for him.

Thomas has had success in the AHL in the past. last year was not good. It will be interesting to see what he can do this year.

He has a lot of speed. But so far I see a Palushaj, Ben Maxwell level of player. I hope he proves me wrong.

That's sadly insulting to Maxwell/Palushaj since they were at least good AHL players by their 2nd AHL season.

As a 20 year old rookie, Maxwell had 58 points in 73 games - 2 points from being team's leading scorer: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0007912009.html

As a 21 year old 2nd year player, Palushaj had 57 points in 68 games - team's leading scorer in points and goals: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0007912011.html

Maxwell, Palushaj, Leblanc, Chipchura, Thomas, McCarron, Collberg, Naatinnen, Holland all fall into more or less in the same category. Their value peaked at the draft and few months after, then they kept falling. The reality hits us (and them) when they approach the age where they suppose to be in NHL.

Barring injuries, one of those players will be passing the 400 career game mark next season.

Never understood why Montreal got rid of Chipchura. Maybe it was due to his pressure as a first round pick but he was projecting to be a third line center and ended up a fourth line center. Then Montreal had to trade or pick up via waivers a fourth line center for every year after that it felt while Chipchura played competent on the fourth line for Anaheim and Phoenix.

cuz if you actually remember him playing for the habs he was TERRIBLE. could not skate close to NHL level, was like lats minus the size and potential scoring. He tore his achillies the year after he was drafted and was never the same. The west is much more suitable for his abilities on teams like that, and of course being a top pick here doesn't help. He works very hard to keep his spot in the league.

Yeah well when a thread about Jack Nevins gets more attention than Christian Thomas, I guess it says a lot about his status on the depth chart.

With De La Rose, Andrighetto, Scherbak sooner than later, and now Sekac, where do you see Thomas landing as far as the call-up rank?

Do you guys think he'll make the big show one day or is he just AHL fodder at this point?

Was last year a fluke considering he was injured for a good part of it?

I'm not impressed at all so hopefully he stays put unless or until he shows he can dominate in that league.

Lol...2 names I was thinking when read this thread. Along with Duncan Milroy.

Don't know about that. Do you think either one of Kristo/Thomas has the potential to play over 300 NHL games / score over 100 points?

If neither does, the trade was a wash. There are limits to how many players an NHL team can have under contract. Every June another batch of players are drafted. It's like fishing. Most of the picks are undersized and are thrown back.

Habs sign Christian Thomas

montreal canadiens general manager marc bergevin announced thursday that forward christian thomas has agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract with the club (2015-16).
