Chris Simon diagnosed with Stage 3 CTE

I feel for Simon and his family. It's yet another problem without a solution. Sports cause injuries, there's just no way around that. Head and brain injuries included.

There's clearly a link between fighting in hockey and CTE specifically. The NHL should provide better mental health care for retired players. But what real solution can there be other than to ban fighting?

Interestingly enough, US courts don't put a lot of weight in "assumption of the risk" defenses in cases of employer/employee situations. For example, a person can't waive the responsibility employers have to follow OSHA guidelines.

It sounds really tough and cool to say he made his choice, and maybe (or maybe not) in a moral or ethical way you are write. But in a legal way you are wrong.

Even in a moral or ethical way, with all the misinformation they have been pushing for years about CTE and hockey, the league likely misled the players into accepting risks that they weren't fully informed about. Obviously, the players could have done more research on their own and listened to outside experts, but that isn't an excuse for the league to get away with persistent lying to protect their profits.
