Cap space isn't THAT tight league wide right now with the cap going up so much. If NYR were in a position to dump Kreider for future considerations, teams like Anaheim or San Jose could out-bid Toronto ("we offer a 4th rounder instead of future considerations"), and then that team could just max retain on Kreider and trade him half price cap hit to a playoff team for a good haul.Kreider and his type of situation are the type of players I can see Toronto trying to take advantage of, kind of like when Carolina traded for Patches @ his full cap hit for nothing.
Take a player at full cap hit, who might need a change of scenery/culture change for the NYR and they don't want to retain anything, so they just kind of dump him... and in Toronto eyes, if he's able to rebound to his 60-70 point self for free then it's a win/win for both teams.
There's no scenario where the Leafs just get Kreider for free. With the cap as high as it is nowadays, that kind of a situation you're talking about would be happening for a $9m cap hit or higher player, not a winger under $7m cap hit.
