Last season the Leafs completely overhauled their defense and goaltending with Tanev, OEL, Carlo and Stolarz.

This year it feels like It's the forwards turn.

We know Kreider is available because of the leak last season, and Kreider is definitely the type of player that fits the style of play Berube wants to play.

I think either Kreider or Marchment end up in Toronto.

What's realistically the price?

to New York Rangers
Morgan Rielly (5y @ $7.50m)
Calle Järnkrok (1y @ $2.10m)
RFA rights to Topi Niemelä (if NYR wants them)
maybe also a pick or prospect (?)

total cap = $9.60m

to Toronto Maple Leafs
Chris Kreider (2y @ $6.50m)
Carson Soucy (1y @ $3.25m)

total cap = $9.75m

This would be ideal for Toronto. Not sure Rangers fans think it's enough, but hopefully it's a framework Rangers fans would be willing to work with and then modify from there. Leafs may have to add a pick or prospect to get it done. Finding a place to trade Rielly and getting an actual useful player back would be great. Leafs could either keep Soucy or trade him out right away and bring in a puck moving D that isn't Rielly. Perhaps Gostisbehere, I don't know.

Lebrun has already said Rielly isn't waiing his NMC

I don’t think the NYR would try to squeeze value out of a CK move, they just don’t want to take a lot of cap back. I think Holmberg/Neimela would do it. CK would look good helping to anchor that 2nd line

Kreider has a 15 team NTC. Many Rangers fans suspect all Canadian teams are on his list.

Maybe but that doesn't mean he wouldn't waive.

I seem to recall Olli Jokenin having the NYR on his list but waving to go there when Calgary traded him.

Besides, even if he does, I'd argue it wouldn't make sense to say no to Leafs, Oilers, or Jets if they came calling.

Those are VERY strong teams

As a NYR fan, I don't see how Kreider is a fit for Toronto. They already have a top 5 powerplay over the last 3 years and Kreider doesn't play with pace like he use to. I think you have better, cheaper options that fit the 3rd line role. I don't think his PK ability is really enough for it to make sense. If you want to take his cap from us I won't stop you, but I think a pick & prospect is enough here.

Kreider is a LW right?

our 2LW has been one of the bigger weaknesses on this team for a while. It was rotating shift of Patches/Holmberg/Robertson/McMann last year.

I'm amazed this is being pitched by a Toronto Maple Leafs fan.

I can't envision any scenario where the Maple Leafs would want to acquire Chris Kreider.

He's 34 years old, coming off a 30 point season and his greatest asset, his speed, is clearly in decline.

This would be a terrible acquisition. I can't imagine Brad Treliving would be dumb enough to do this.

I would personally prefer Mason Marchment but I can see this happening for sure.

How I feel about it would depend on the price, if there is money going back, if there is retention all those factors matter.

This would be a big mistake.

Chris Kreider took a *big* step down this past season.

The Leafs would be unquestionably worse with Rielly out and Kreider in. Chris Kreider is not the player the once was.

No offense OP, but the Leafs really needs to not be done working on their blueline.

I also suspect the Leafs will be looking at the free agency market more than they will be looking to make trades. Especially trades for aging, over the hill players like Kreider, who I loved a couple of years back, but father time is catching up with. Father Time remains undefeated. I think the Rangers would be happy to have offers for him at this stage of his career.

Rielly very likely isn't going anywhere according to Lebrun so I'm not sure why you brought that up.

Kreider still has great wheels. The thing about Kreider is that while he's fast, the real strength of his game is as a net front man on the PP. Corey Perry is playing that role right now with a fraction of the speed Kreider has.

Corey Perry is playing with two of the Top 5 players in the world.

LW but can play RW. Winger position aside, unless Kreider gets 100% healthy and looks like a player from a few years ago, I just don't see the fit with him.

Kreider can still skate fast. His top speed has dropped only like .5mph over the last 3 seasons, but he's way too inconsistent with that skating. I don't if it's the injury he had to his back, or just gets gassed quicker being close to mid-30, but it's just not consistent enough.
