Speculation: Chris Johnston "An atom bomb could drop"

I'm fine with both as something like UFAs, but tossing on a first for them becomes questionable

Laughton is a decent 4th line C, Carlo is fine as middle pairing support

Essentially, they are both disposable. The "catalytic conversion" that could happen is essentially:

Laughton, Carlo, cash and cap space out.

Upgrade on Laughton, Carlo via free agency, modest futures and or roster change in.

I know he didn't make a good first impression, but it's virtually impossible to upgrade on Laughton at his $1.5m caphit in UFA. Carlo at $3.4m either imo.

Carlo I could easily see traded for a centre. They could trade Laughton for draft capital and just replace him with a UFA.

I'm fine keeping them though

Why?? I would look to add 1 year deals for filler. It's been proven no amount of rearranging the bottom 6 and defense has produced anything.

Essentially I would be looking to weaponize the cap increase.

So you take someone like Brandon Carlo as an example, flush him out for futures, and re-invest his cap hit plus premium to land a better defenseman. You use up your cap freedom, get better in position and recoup some assets.

Recoup a couple second rounders and roll with Benny + Kampf/Holmberg? Not sure you're upgrading in UFA with the cap space, but you could break even I guess. Feels like change for the sake of change at that point given you just acquired both and have them for a year.

You've largely killed trade options without those firsts though

Also kinda funny that Minten would be a good option for depth C to replace Laughton on the cheap

I wouldn't trade them for futures, but if there's hockey trades available the Leafs could consider it. Especially if say Tre wants to make a run at Ekblad.

Anything jump to mind? Maybe LA for Danault? That's all I got

I brought up Danaults name yesterday.
Not sure LA would move him but he's coming off a season where he shot only 6%, so maybe inline for some positive regression.
If Mitch walks and we're looking for ways to stay close to the same level, building a team three strong down the middle is one way (Matthews-Tavares-Danault) or something like that.

He's a good option especially if you want to bring JT back

You can run JT - Nylander for offense then Laughton - Danault as your 3rd line a matchup vs a top 6

We need to build a better third line and get more out of it come playoff time.

We will need to go through Florida and that's the one thing I see most when I watch these games, in that our third line is nowhere near the quality of theirs.

It was a two minute penalty if you wanted to stretch it.

That play wouldn’t have injured the average person which is very concerning for Stolarz.
Agree to disagree.

Impact doesn’t require a great distance to have significant damage. In fact that’s a fundamental element of delivering an effective punch.

My larger point stands. Deficient officiating has had a material effect on our club. It doesn’t remove accountability, but it’s a factor that is very difficult to overcome.

I think the guy worth grabbing off LA is Tanner Jeannot as a UFA. Guys a plug but has a power forward makeup, once displayed a scoring touch and was a big time add for Tampa a few short years ago. It the cost is cheapish he would be part of a pack of 3-4 guys you can introduce to change team complexion.

There is a very small portion of Leafs fans that thought that was a suspension worthy penalty and everyone else agrees it was a nothing play.

I happen to think that 75% of the general public would have been able to absorb that hit and Stolarz may have to consider his health before resuming his career.

I disagree. They've tried that route with different guys. The results are the same. Til the leaders of this team start leading by example and playing heavy, nothing changes.

The first paragraph is far from fact. There was a debate in the media, there was commentary by professionals that didn’t measure in the range of “small portion” to say nothing of the fans.

Even Berube in his post-game response called a clear elbow.

So apart from your preference, I have no idea as to how you can claim “everyone else agrees”.

And 75%? Why not 83% or 62%?

Weight and speed from a short distance can knock people out and certainly cause concussions and their symptoms.

You’re free to think and believe anything you like.

Treliving needs to be dynamic with Laughton and Carlo:

I think Carlo is pretty good, but if we can cycle him out for a younger forward or something like a 1st round pick, and re-spend all of his money plus a kicker on Aaron Ekblad, we would have upgraded the D position and padded up some org. depth. Gotta keep churning assets in tandem with free agency buys with cap space to heal the depth chart. An alternative solution would be to trade McCabe in a similar scenario, grab a replacement on the UFA market, same concept.

The Laughton trade was a disaster and I would gladly flush him for any futures. However, the other thought process is if we build a more aggressive team and input guys like Bennett, Marchand, Jeannot, etc. I could see Laughton being activated to play a harder game and becoming more useful. His cap hit isn't very significant so it could go either way.
I would trade Reilly for picks and prospects and then go after Ekblad before moving Carlo.
I think the D with
OEL-Ekblad
McCabe-Tanev
Beniot-Carlo
Are as good as any Cup winning teams.

What’s make this Dcorp special is the fact that all 6 of them had played first pairing minutes against opposing top lines for a long period in the NHL. Benoit played first pairing minutes in Anaheim while Carlo did it in Boston.

All the Toronto media I listened to thought it was a nothing burger because that’s what it was.

Bérubé was wrong. It clearly wasn’t an elbow

There are a lot of soft people so I picked 75%. Football wouldnt have been invented if a tap like that knocked people out.

No, it isn't...

Laughton is not special... go sign another player who had a down year and is left over at the end of free agency and you got the same thing that Laughton is right now, a reclamation project.
