Speculation: Chris Johnston "An atom bomb could drop"

Why not? They have 3/4 of a competitive team already. Treliving doesn't have to complete the team on July 1st. He can use his cap space at the trade deadline 2026.
If you mean regular season sure they are competitive. At this point the guys this team needs to win aren't usually available in free agency. This team needs leaders who will drive the play and hate to lose come playoff time. Unfortunately IMO the guys who are supposed to be leading this team aren't good enough.

There's a pretty big gap between Marner and the names there. I'd also add a gap between the Gaudreau and MTs of the world and that group.

He didn't sign the NMC, but he was aware of it and did have his window to move/make decisions.

And "the Calgary factor" doesn't seem to carry over to many other areas that I can remember. I look at dumps like Winnipeg who were able to resign Scheif and Helle or Buffalo resigning Eichel (only to piss it away on the Doctor issue)

Again, seems like a lot of excuses without much substance on those issues.

I guess we'll see what he does this summer, but my hopes aren't high given what we've seen and what assets we've already pissed away
You mean the 30 days between when he was hired and Marners NTC kicked in?
With the draft, free agency Matthews to sign oh and the President that just hired held a press conference saying he believes in the core 4 and wanted to run it back.
Im sure it was his top priority.
He looked into trading Willy, clearly was willing to trade Mitch and look at the Flames Owner, they refused to rebuild forced Tre into a retool when both JG and MT wanted out and have since interfered with trades with Tre and the Leafs.

Yup, the time he was hired, met with the President and the fanbase was expecting change.

I don't think Shanny or Tre wanted change and we saw it.

30 days with top assets is plenty of time to get things done

In the offseason with 10% cap overage it’s impossible. At the deadline with multiple other deals and guys about to come off LTIR while already at the ceiling, 1-2 weeks is no problem to land a Rantanen deal + probably extension.

Treliving traded Tkachuk out of Calgary with far less notice/time.

Tre was the GM for the Flames for what 8 years at the time drafted MT and could have went to arbitration with him and traded him at anytime.
The President of the Leaf said he talked to all of the core four and told them he was running it back before Tre was hired.
Could you imagine this board if Tre traded Mitch in his first 28 days on the job and got a similar return and Mitch won a cup.
Every Boston Pizza would be burned to the ground.

How did he get a Marner trade ready with Carolina in the week Carolina decided to trade Rantanen?

Brad didn't trade MT at "anytime" - he traded him very shortly after MT told him that he wasn't going to sign an extension.

We aren't still pretending like Shanahan phone calls mattered, are we? He tried trading Nylander away immediately once he got here.

Most would have accepted that the time for serious change was long past due and welcomed a trade to shake up the core, had Marner been traded.

It's been almost a month since being eliminated, and it feels like Shanahan being let go and Marner not resigning is the "DNA change."

Oh, and then signing Bennett at around $9m.

Love Bennett but 3 straight cup finals, 4 Nations and most likely the Olympics nexts season feels like a ton of extra hockey and huge expectations playing in TO that contract could look bad in just one season in Leaf fans eyes

Signing Bennett would be a big step in culture change. The caveat is we will need to build a line of likeminded players around him so he isn't plug and play on a completely incompatible line. Probably needs a tougher meaner Jeannot type addition, and a finesse winger to handle the skill work.

Yeah, but the contract is just going to suck.

They need to find their own Bennett, who is in the same spot he was in Calgary.

I’ve been saying this for so long lol

Bennett has multiple playoff runs, multiple finals runs, a couple hundred games, like 3-4 injuries too. By year 2-3 of the contract he might be broken. Also he’s gonna be making nearly double what he makes now.

You need to find the next Bennett, Coleman, Wilson, etc… guys who haven’t broken out but are ripe for it. I thought mcmann was one of those types, but he severely disappointed in the playoffs so now I don’t think so.

While this is true, these kind of players aren't always available to be found.

I guess to help the search, you would basically be looking for a player from about the 2018-2021 draft who has disappointed but has rugged play style, maybe buried behind a depth chart he can't get out from under. Dylan Holloway isn't that rugged, but he was probably that guy!

Or probably our friend Ridly Greig.

Yes, @Fogelhund has thrown out Krebs before, which is a decent suggestion. Jack McBain in Utah, perhaps, which is a common @WTFMAN99 suggestion.

Or maybe we go back to the proto-Bennett in Kadri?

But I would extend the idea to also trying to find our own Forsling and Montour as well.
