Speculation: Chris Johnston "An atom bomb could drop"

The Maple Leafs have $26,859,001 in salary cap space going into the 2025-26 season, as per our friends at PuckPedia. Toronto may free up even more space if they move, or buy out, David Kampf and/or Calle Jarnkrok, which is under consideration, according to a team source.

A solid chunk of their cap allotment will go to pending restricted free agent Matthew Knies, who is likely to command a contract in the three-to-five-year range and an AAV of $7 million or higher.
Fellow RFAs-to-be Pontus Holmberg and Nick Robertson are also in need of new deals, as are forwards Max Pacioretty and Steven Lorentz, both of whom contributed in positive ways this season, but can become unrestricted free agents July 1.

Move out Jankrok and Kampf under consideration? It should have been done prior to the playoffs

how many has mackinnon scored in?

also why was it a whiff by Bob? ive seen matthews score tons of goals five hole along the ice.
Comparing Matthews who constantly disappears in the playoffs to MacKinnon and his Stanley cup ring ? Why not focus on the core group’s lack of scoring in the biggest games since you say it’s not about scoring.

considering he was injured since training camp, it makes sense why he looked defeated, dont ya think??
Ya but he couldve took time off
He either lied about being injured or he was pushed
But he led the playoffs in missing the net accuracy
He was f***ing hurt

Why would we buyout Domi? Rielly sure, but Domi? Senseless. If we don't re-sign Marner we'll doubly need him anyways and I bet he would play well with Matthews (at least in the offensive zone, anyways.)

He's useless is why we would move him. He's a natural center who is a horrible center, has zero concept of two way play. He had a couple week hot streak, two seasons ago, with Matty, people remember that and think that is what we should expect. He also had a few games with Matty and they were terrible together. At 3.75 mil he is too expensive for a 3rd liner and not good enough for a top 6 role.

Once you have a kid you magically accumulate tons of random shit in your house and when you travel 90% of the bags/items are for the kids

Parenting is a scam

No idea what this post was about but after living in the same house for 25 years, I now know we can never move there's so much shit here. And we purge once in awhile. I literally say no to my wife when she wants to buy things with drawers and shelves because it's just one more place to put crap no one's ever going to use again. Sorry to go on but this is one of my trigger items.

Brother I hate accumulating crap but I also hate throwing things away because I always think I'm going to re-use something.

You ever get this one from your wife?

“My parents are going through their old stuff and set aside a pile of things we could have!”

Translation: They felt guilty about throwing things out, so they’re gonna make it our problem.

I can do you one better: I bought my parents' house from them in 2018 so they could move closer to the city near healthcare, etc. There was so much crap you wouldn't believe it. I told my father I'm clearing it all out unless you want it. Example: my mother had 3 glue guns still in the package! I gave them a month and them I rented a cube van and made 5 trips to the dump. Damn we're wasteful in this society. I'm probably wasting something right now. No idea what I'll do with the metal lathe though :)

My guess Nylander would go anywhere there's a game, even the SCF's, and just play.
Any chance the leafs trade Willy for a package around high picks, a really good prospect and a player like Garland and then use the assets to go after a high- end Dman like Dobson?

Adding him, Bennett and either keeping Marner or adding another 1 or two wingers via trade and UFA shakes up the core, improves a very vanilla Dcorp, shakes things up without making the team worse offensively?
I would love to get Willy next to EP40.

Jesus man, it has been less than two weeks.

Step 1: it’s only been two weeks
Step 2: they only had a week before the draft, what could they really do
Step 3: they need a year to assess the team
Step 4: we can only really judge what they do in the 2027 offseason

Willy would cost a lot man. Not sure if the nucks have the assets. Obviously you have Hughes so I guess you do have the assets but we all know Hughes is going absolutely nowhere because he'd be worth way more.

I'd rephrase that question to, "Does Nylander want to leave the city he committed his career to and, without complaint, loves to play in?"

Leafs have control over forwards: Knies, Laughton, McMann, Reaves, Robertson and Holmberg.

If ignoring NMC's, I think the biggest homerun would be moving Matthews, who is only under contract for the next 3 years. My guess is some team in the USofA, would overpay for him. Not sure you could get the 1st. overall for him this year, perhaps and Dobson?

But lessor players like Domi has a NTC, so there are about 18 teams he could be traded to.

Did he mean a bomb the size of an atom?

Seriously, there are big problems with the core as well all know, but the bottom 6 was never reliable offensively this year and it seems to be getting worse each season. So besides the bigger fish he has to deal with this summer, revamping the 3rd/4th lines should be a priority.

Move on from Holmberg (brings no offense), ditto for Jarnkrok, Robertson isn't a viable playoff option and get Kampf to waive (which should be easy as he's been replaced by Laughton). That's a start.

Have to see who will be available still (trade or UFAs who get through re-sign phase), but guys that compete and create goals on turnovers, winning puck battles, forechecking can be just as impactful as the rare 3rd liner than can consistently score goals.

Replacing marner ... could be Domi. Yeah, huge drop-off, hopefully with the Knies growth and a return to health can mitigate that loss.

Middle 6 is key.

I could care less if they even had 3 players for the 4th. line. Just dress 2 players with a minimum NHL Cap Hit, and chose players who can PK and defend.

Middle 6 candidates below.

Marner, Kampf, Jarnkrok and Reilly out.

Get Kampf and Reilly to waive.

Re-sign Tavares on half of his current deal.

Re-sign Lorentz and Holmberg

Sign Granlund (C), Kane, Mangiapane (LW) and Tanev (C/RW) in free agency

Trade Reilly in a deal to either acquire assets (picks and prospects) or as part of a larger deal to get true top pairing dman (ex. NYI Dobson). If traded for picks and prospects go all out for Ekblad at any cost. Worth the risk.

Preferred lineup:

Knies-Mathews-Kane
Mangiapane-Granlund-Nylander
McMann-Tavares-Domi
Lorentz-Laughton-Tanev
Holmberg

OEL-Ekblad
McCabe-Tanev
Benoit-Carlo
Myers

Stolarz
Woll

Pretty sure I have 2x4’s, nails and such from 1987 in my garage from when they built my house……

Wondering what happens 1st: the Leafs win the Stanley Cup or that wood/ nails get used….

If we ever win a Cup I'm going to get a tattoo of a goat snorting blow off a hooker or something

Hockey players should take a page out of NBA/MLB players handbook, if they have any sort of issue, no matter how minor, they dont ever play. ...maybe no need to go to that extreme, but, we have hockey players playing through bone separations, and things that would cost other sports an entire season, while getting paid much less too.

I can play through it mentality is how it drags on all season and costs you a series in the playoffs.

Right now, i'm fairly certain Tkchuck (love or hate him) is maybe only 50-60% healthy
