Speculation: Chris Johnston "An atom bomb could drop"

It's just golf between friends. Who cares where it is and how it's perceived. Looks like a nice private golf club close enough to their home and respective families. Why would they go somewhere so far away. Probably their last outing before they go back home and do their thing in the off-season.
It's all so stupid. The season is over, no one should care.
They leave town, "they couldn't get out of here fast enough, probably had their tickets booked weeks ago" , go golf, "what are they doing? at least leave town so no one notices" , scatter various ways " team isn't close, couldn't get away from each other fast enough". etc. etc.

Just more excuses for 16 and 34. They got by early thanks to 88 and 67, but when their production dried up, other than Matty's game #6 goal, they both sucked. IMO the Panthers did not wake up until going down 2-0 in game 3. Once they upped the physicality, the owned the Leafs. I was surprised they took their foot off the gas in game #6. How else does one explain that game sandwiched between 6-1 wins a SBA?
They deserve the criticism m. Sorry if you don’t like it or can’t take it. It’s not just about the failing. It’s how you fail, what you say and your attitude towards the fans/media after you fail, what you show next time. What they show next time is often worse than all those things before.

There is a difference between disappointment for continued losing and looking like you refuse to lay it on the line.

The sad part is hated ex-Hab Max Patches would get more praise for the series than the lack of 2nd gear core that has been here for 9 years. Time to go. All of them. Only themselves to blame.

Genuinely think some would only accept these guys locking themselves up in their homes / condos for 2 months to "think about what they've done".

I've never understood why anyone gets worked up about this kind of crap.

Let them live their lives. You want them coming back refreshed and re-energized, not traumatized.

What's not to buy?

Fan pressure exists, and while it devolves into criticism when things aren't going well, it also balloons into blue-and-white disease when things are going exceptionally well.

Bobby McMann started last year with the Marlies, was called up when everyone was sick / injured, scored a hat trick, and we built him up into something that helped him earn a nice new deal - many people also believed we would have won the Boston series if he was healthy.

Toronto is a market that will build you into something huge, if you just show up and work hard and have a little bit of success. Look at the way Simon Benoit is treated, for example.

The pressure is real, and it exists, but it's not this crippling toxic thing - it's just a bunch of people caring.

A few idiots shouldn't change that.

I meant I dont buy the whole narrative those assholes in florida tried to spin and I dont think leaf fans are toxic but I think we have some very idiot fans who do this shit, or make threats to marners newborn or dox his address, throwing beer at players on the bench, berating the scratches in the elevators; that kind of shit is problematic and we know hockey players are thin skinned so when other hockey players see this they want no part of it and dont want to sign here

That would be my larger concern, and something that I hope is on MLSE's radar.

Even if you vehemently disagree with the idea that Toronto is a tough market to play in, it doesn't matter, if the perception is out there that it is.

And we know hockey is a close knit fraternity and a lot of these guys are friends and that they train together in the summer and share many of the same agents etc.

If word is out in hockey circles that Toronto is an awful place to play, that becomes a huge problem moving forward.

I mentioned a few examples the other day - Ryan O'Rielly wanted no part of this marketplace, and David Perron had identical deals from Toronto and Ottawa, and decided to go to the "quieter" market instead despite his obvious connection with Berube.

You just start adding notches to this narrative, and it grows and grows and grows - that's something that needs to be addressed, quickly.

I'm disappointed that the Leafs didn't come out fighting harder for their marketplace, or their fans, during their avails on Tuesday - the onus is on them, even if they don't believe it, to sell the shit out of Toronto and help other players come here and help themselves win.

I wonder if we get a different approach once management (Eventually) talks

I mostly agree with this but I think the Leafs did come out pretty strongly talking about how much they love it here and how people caring is what makes them want to play here (Willy has said it multiple times and gone on record saying this is the only place to win the cup)

This is by far one of the best and fair breakdowns of the series against the Panthers.

They're allowed to live their lives though.

We can't criticize them for wilting like cheap flowers under the pressure of the market, and then criticize them for not cowering in their penthouse apartments for weeks after their season ends.
Thank you.

We can't be hypocrites here.

Joseph Woll's answer was the only one that didn't sound like pure PR fluff and BS. I don't think they came out anywhere near as strong enough to what was going to be the most obvious line of questioning.

After what Berube said, and after a possible chat with MM of: can you live w/o 34 for a year. Can you wait for 97 for a year and did you have that conversation with him about us at 4 nations?

Good read. The powerplay continues to haunt them and is consistently a problem. If a zone entry involves Tavares it fails. Marner doesn't handle the puck pressure very well. No threat from the point. Things definitely need to change there.
Florida being able to match up their 3rd line against our so called top line was a huge advantage for them.
It is no wonder our opponents always praise us after they annihilate us, they want to keep on doing it. Jon Cooper and now Paul Maurice are the ultimate spin doctors.

watch Nylander's interview form the year on how much it means to be a maple leaf and how Toronto is the only place worth winning a cup

He's also the idiot who calls blow outs at home "just a shitty game"

I mean, yeah, you were all shit, but game 7 at home losing by 5 being manhandled? That's gotta mean more to you than just another game

And some people actually wanna throw an 'A' at this guy? He can't even motivate himself to forecheck or backcheck. But hey I guess it's ok because his NZ floating leads to the most breakaways in the league, yay

It’s an hour from North York, and it’s golf. That’s my point; It’s tone deaf.

Edit: ACC’s howling; Well isn’t it?
Are they supposed to be devastated they lost, and sit around for a month? It's hockey lol, they go out and live their life afterwards. Should we be ripping Nylander 3 days after getting eliminated he's playing for Sweden?

Some people care way to much about what athletes do and don't do.

So if Matthews is golfing does that mean his injury is not back or wrist related. He said it will heal itself. Could he be dealing with a sickness instead of a physical injury?
I'm just hoping its not one of those "its not gonna get better" injuries and hes just stuck with something.

He wasnt doing much golfing the past couple of days its been horrible out there. That being said, if something was wrong with his back or wrist it didnt impede on his playing but playing effectively and at his peak. If it is something that doesnt need surgery then there is no harm in some golf which is less intensive than a 200ft game in the playoffs every second day.

People need to layoff Matthews, we know he has an issue. He went to Germany for heavens sake. It wasnt for a cold. And we know he wasnt the same player this season.

Shortest time spent on the most important player. The first half of it used to shoehorn things that are completely off-topic like their experience in scrums. The rest used to softly defend the decision for him to play hurt for 100% of the season even though it will allegedly take 4 months of rest and no surgery for him to return to "100%". Then they just neatly move on. This must be the mean Leafs market we hear so much about. :shakehead

"I trust the Leafs medical staff!" Meanwhile it benefits one person and one person alone for this selfish weasel to play hurt all season. Yeah... it wasn't the team making this decision if they haven't been paying attention for the last 7 years. But I'm glad he enjoyed his time stinking it up at the 4 Nations at the expense of the Leafs.

25% of this albatross contract gone in the wind just like that. 25% closer to the rebuild that they are already 2 years of our lives late for.
