Speculation: Chris Johnston "An atom bomb could drop"

Why save cap space for the next season? Spend to the cap on talent and hope it's enough to carry Mathews to a Cup.
Because the market this year will be crazy due to the hike in cap space. Desperate GMs will give out huge money. And you can't just replace Marner with another 8 figure forward. They have to be smart with the money to not end up in the same situation

His playoff stats plus how he doesn't take over games is the problem. I posted this earlier but it speaks volumes.

The drop in core four scoring from regular season to playoffs

Posting this fully in part to sharpen it.

Difference between reg season points per game and playoffs points per game from the core five between 2016 and now:

Matthews -0.28

Marner -0.23

Nylander -0.07

Tavares -0.32

**What does this mean exactly?**

-0.1 is very typical

-0.2 is underwhelming

-0.3 is historically bad

90% of all NHL players ever are -0.1

Many notable NHLers are at -0.2 like:

Mario Lemieux, Yzerman, Jagr, Lafontaine, Gartner, Joe Mullen, Nieuwendyk, Shanahan funny enough, Datsyuk, Lanny McDonald, Joe Thornton

Some notable NHLers at -0.3 or more are:

Dionne, Robitaille, likely some more

(inherently factoring in age decline all told)

Seems perfectly fitting given that the massive pressure they're facing, but maybe other factors also. Crumbling under expectations. Also worth mentioning they've faced better goalies than most playoff teams do so far, a significant element.

Holtby, Rask, KORPISALO ON STEROIDS, Price, Vasilevskiy, Swaymark, Bobrovsky

So. Yeah. A fascinating situation.
Can’t argue about his points or goal scoring, they have been very underwhelming but he’s a great 2 way player. Great in faceoffs. Playing injured it seems every year. These guys are way too hard to find. How many years did Toronto go from 2004 till Matthews showed up without a legit 1C. Trading him
Is just crazy.

You can find great 2 way players easy. The problem is Matthews is paid to score and he doesn't do it come playoff time.

I’m less interested if he has and more if he can. I don’t think Marner can score a lot against contenders without radically changing his game to survive playing 15 feet closer to the net, I think Matthews can if he plays the series identically but his shooting is 10% more accurate and he gets the 10MPH back on it that he dropped this year. One of those sounds reasonably doable with rehab and some luck staying healthy, the other one sounds impossible unless they perfect brain and testicle transplants over the offseason.

I agree. You can’t keep the 4 of them. The team just isn’t built right. Whether people want to agree or not you don’t trade your superstar 1C. It’s so hard to find another one. You keep Matthews and build the team around him. Unfortunately 1 or even 2 of the others have to go.
Build the team around the piece of shit who threw the entire team under the bus instead of owning up to HIS shortcomings? Pound sand to that idea………

That says otherwise. Yes Matthews being injured this season was an issue but since 2016 his points per game in the playoffs has always been this bad.

I have a Sabres fan on here that keeps sending me "lol" type DMs after one drunken night of shit talking during the Panthers series. Funny how invested he is getting with chirping me and the leafs as a buffalo fan
Literally the only thing Sabres fans have to look forward to is chirping rivals.

They have ZERO hope as long as Pegula owns the team. Literally none. No exaggeration. It doesn’t matter what assets they acquire they are simply screwed. To their credit many Sabres fans acknowledge this.

Ya it's why I don't take his chirps seriously. I'll just let him "bro at me" 😂

No fan of a team that hasn't made the playoffs in 14 years is allowed to talk shit and not sound like an idiot, I'm sorry.
Apparently it doesn't matter to the rest of the hockey world. Leafs are ripe for picking from anyone... Winners or losers... And it's ok cuz it's the basic white bitch trendy thing to do!

They do deserve the maximum embarassment possible, but from the f***ing Sabres?!?

THere's a fairly realistic chance the Sabres may come close to having a two decade long playoff drought if the have to undergo yet another organizational retool

I see Anderson has helped the Canes get to the conference finals. We ran him out of town because we convinced ourselves that we could never win with him
That's not really what happened. He was a very good starting goalie, well into the top half of starters in the league before having a brutal season and a half while at the same time our newly acquired Campbell was having an excellent season and a half. By halfway through the last year of his deal, Campbell had won the starting job and looked like he would be the guy going forward. Andersen had been good enough for long enough that he had the right to ask 5 million a year on his next deal, and why should the leafs be the one to pay that when they have every reason to believe they've found his replacement at 1/3 the price?

He was also injured for a lot of his last season as a Leaf and the Leafs got frustrated with his unwillingness to play.

Again I don't fully blame Shananhan for the issues. He's just a mediator between the board and the GM. IMO a lot of the issues like keeping the core together was from the board.
He’s the guy at the top and hired Dubas who had no clue how to build a cup contender. Shanny doesn’t get off the hook here. The buck stopped with him.
