Speculation: Chris Johnston "An atom bomb could drop"

some are putting too much stock in the troll job the Panther played on the Leafs after winning, I bet they're still laughing at how gullible Leaf Nation is...........
You know it’s the wrong move when every other fan base wants to see it run back one more time. They want to watch the fail again.

I think he’s talking about Leafs management. It’s too soon to trade players. New ownership / control of the Board. Shanahan will be gone, Treliving could be gone. Pelley ? Berube ? I think it depends on who’s available.

are big changes afoot or are they just letting Shanny get out of town before announcing he's gone?

TORONTO — With the future of Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan hanging in the air following the team’s second-round series loss to the Florida Panthers, the Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment board of directors will meet Thursday as part of the organization’s end-of-season review, multiple league sources briefed on the agenda of the meeting told The Athletic.
Shanahan just completed his 11th season in the position and is on a contract that is due to expire at the end of June.

Internally, the bar ownership had set for progress on this Leafs season was an appearance in the Eastern Conference final, according to league sources. Toronto fell one win short of that benchmark, albeit in dispiriting fashion — with a pair of 6-1 losses to the Panthers at Scotiabank Arena in Games 5 and 7.
The way that series ended has left ownership disappointed and embarrassed, according to sources. As close as the Leafs were to taking a meaningful step from previous seasons, the way they lost made it feel a little farther from reach.

However, when it comes to determining Shanahan’s future and the hierarchy of the team’s hockey operations structure moving forward, ownership recognizes the need to take a methodical approach.
They don’t want to make any knee-jerk or emotional decisions.
The Shanahan decision comes at a time of internal change at MLSE. While the sale of Bell’s 37.5 percent stake in the company to Rogers Communications Inc., hasn’t yet closed, that’s viewed as a formality that will soon leave Rogers with a controlling 75 percent interest in the company. Edward Rogers, Tony Staffieri and David Miller currently occupy the Rogers seats on the board.

It’s not yet clear if Thursday’s board meeting will result in a final decision on Shanahan’s future. In the event the organization decides to move on from him, the team will likely move forward without a team president for the foreseeable future, according to the sources.

Further complicating the path forward with Shanahan is the fact that the New York Islanders have expressed interest in speaking to him about their top hockey job, according to league sources.

This marks the first opportunity for Keith Pelley to put his stamp on the Leafs since becoming MLSE president and CEO in April 2024. He decided against making any management changes following a first-round loss to the Boston Bruins last spring because of how little time he’d had on the job.

At that time, Pelley spoke positively about his first impressions in watching Shanahan and Leafs general manager Brad Treliving work together.
“Brendan is the president of the Toronto Maple Leafs,” Pelley told reporters last May. “He’s a champion. He’s a three-time Stanley Cup winner. What I saw in my four weeks with the two gentlemen beside me showed me that the chemistry and unity is being built at the highest levels. And I don’t have any other comments because I wasn’t here in the last eight years.

“I understand the results, but I can only evaluate what I’ve seen in the first four weeks.”
Pelley has since had another 12 months to make his evaluation, getting a first-hand look at a season where the Leafs finished atop the Atlantic Division with 108 points and beat the Ottawa Senators in Round 1 before being eliminated by the Panthers.

This is a critical offseason for the team with top forwards Mitch Marner and John Tavares both eligible to become unrestricted free agents and Marner seemingly poised to test the open market on July 1.
While Shanahan’s future with the club is still being determined, there is a positive internal view on the job Treliving has done in his first two years as GM. He’s under contract beyond this season.
The hockey world is not exactly brimming with experienced high-end management talent, and no one currently available has a stronger resume than Shanahan. Already a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame as a player, the 56-year-old spent five years in the NHL’s head office, rising to the position of the league’s senior vice president, before arriving in Toronto.

Shanahan was hired by the Leafs in April 2014 and spearheaded an extensive overhaul of the team’s hockey operations department while restoring connections with the franchise’s alumni. He’s overseen an operation that has made nine consecutive playoff appearances, the longest active streak among NHL teams, but hasn’t advanced beyond the second round during his tenure.
The last time the Leafs reached the Eastern Conference Final was 2002. The team hasn’t won a Stanley Cup since 1967.

But if you DID trade him, you have to replace those 45 goals in the regular season, and honestly, without his production against Ottawa, they may have not even beaten Ottawa in round 1.

If you trade Nylander and Matthews is still here, is the defacto leader and captain of this team, I don't see how you are much better unless you get a historic, crazy return for Nylander.
They tried to trade Nylander before they re-signed him and were disappointed with the offers. After his disappearing act against Florida, I doubt the offers will be any better.

Low life, loser behaviour.
Hopefully they receive a lifetime ban from the building.
Absolutely. Trashing the ice is bad enough. Trashing the ice with a jersey while the play is going on is absolutely silly and reckless and very dangerous. Taking it even further and throwing a beer onto the bench is absolutely disgusting and definitely deserves a lifetime ban.

Yes, emotions run high when it comes to your beloved team, but don't be stupid about it. And certainly not to the point it can directly affect the players during the game/play.

You sound very upset, and particularly angry at Florida. Would much rather have Tkachuk over Matthews. Barkov is worth Marner and Nylander combined. Bobrovsky is better than any goalie we’ve had since Belfour. Shockingly, Toronto’s attempt to build and OHL style NHL team has failed. Crazy eh
I dont know I'm not a fan of p***yes who quit on their teams and run away from Canadian markets because of the pressure. its not like he elevates his scoring in the playoffs either.

How could any NHL team have interest in Brandon Shanahan after a decade if ineptitude and failure

Once your in NHL management/coaching your in for the long run unless you get blackballed for out of performance issues
As bad as he was, what if he was just following MLSE orders. Keep the core together at all costs as they win, make the playoffs and sell jerseys

That was the defense argument used by Dubas/his fans on Shanahan.

If we fault the blame up then MLSE being the culprit means we are f***ed lol.

MLSE BoD argue they were following what the fanbase wanted and running the team to the best interest of the city, making sure playoff caliber team was here to give fans hope for spring.

There has to be accountability at all levels for the past 9 seasons of cumulative failure.

I think he's shown plenty of ability to rebuild a team on and off the ice. We were a mess and a complete utter joke before he got here. It took some time but we got into a real good place and fast.

It didn't work out here and it's more than time to move on but I'd be very happy if my rebuilding team got him to oversee a lot of changes.

I guess we'll see how he does on NYI of he gets a job there.

Isles rebuild likely wont be as quick as the leafs as we had high picks throughout the lineup (JvR, Kadri, Rielly, Nylander, Marner, Matthews) and a good blend of vets and quality upswing prospects (Komorov, Gardiner, Bozak & Kapanan, Johnsson, Hyman, brown and dermott)

Leafs rebuilt over 1.5 years for period where they actually wanted to get high picks

2012, 2014, and 2015 picks we got lucky we sucked bc the team wanted to make the playoffs all 3 of those years. Luckily had our picks then unlike 2010 and 2011 or 2026 and 2027

They failed in winning a championship yes, but under Shanahan the Leafs went from being the leagues laughing stock to making the playoffs in 9 straight seasons. Longest current streak in the NHL.

I think at least 25 other originations will take making the playoffs in 9 straight years, it's extra revenue for them, especially if you're a smaller market team.

Who knows what the future holds but compared to a lot of other high end execs, Shanahan has done pretty well. Maybe he'll do horribly, maybe he'll do more of the same, maybe he'll do better. But I think he's shown a good ability to get people in roles and oversee a good rebuild of the on ice product and management. The Islanders desperately need that after years of just awful managing.

That's a goal for ownership perspective but not for management/fans

Teams need deep playoff run and ideally a cup to cap off a successful era. A year or two where playoffs were missed is better than 9 years of playoffs where 7 of them were bitterly disappointing in my eyes.

Leafs were laughing stocks before like Sabres are now but the team still is ridiculed and mocked now across the league. It just happens now in April or May instead of November or December

Every team in the league would love to have such a problem.

I'd much rather be mocked and ridiculed in the Leafs position then be in Buffalos position, or Edmonton position pre McDavid.
