Speculation: Chris Johnston "An atom bomb could drop"

I want marner to stay. He wasnt the reason we lost. I get it during his previous negotiations painted him like a greedy sob (faults lies on Maple leaf and marners camp) make it work. I'd rather see players like Rielly who are regressing go away.

If he wanted to stay, he should have taken the Willie deal or less and bought some goodwill from the fanbase. Instead he was not willing to negotiate, refused to waive which cost us Rantanen, wants Draisaitl money and soiled his pants again in round #2. Add that the relationship between Marner and the Leafs has been fractured and I'd say, Marner is done here.
I mean, from a human standpoint, his wife was about to have a baby, I think it was pretty unrealistic thinking about it now to have accepted a trade. I don't fault him on that, it does suck though.

I don't think pro athletes really care about getting "goodwill" from the fans, from a business standpoint, his first contract could be his very last, it makes sense to sign for as much money you can... Now if were talking about this contract, he's going to be paid handsomely and has made a lot of money, now's the time to take less money.

He stunk in round 2, but the ENTIRE forward group deserves blame, it's not just his fault or the "core 4 fault". Tavares is getting off pretty unscathed so far, but he provided next to nothing & couldn't keep up with FLA, his role needs to be diminished to the 3rd line and obviously less cap.

Yep.

Leafs fans aren't some toxic problem that Leafs players have to survive. We cheered for a team missing the playoffs for a decade. We nearly built statues for players when they finally made the playoffs. We're the best crowd in the sport to win in front of. And we'd remember forever any player who brought a championship.

Heck, I bet most here remember the great penalty kill from Timmy Brent form over a decade ago where he blocked like 7 shots. Other teams' fans don't love the game like we do to immortalize a small thing like that. Our crazed fandom is an amazing thing when we're given something to cheer for. We're the best fanbase in hockey when there's something to cheer for.

It's not a fault that we expect a high paid roster of stars to win a few playoff rounds. It's not a fault to know and recognize when the players underperform. It's not a fault to call for change after 8 years of the same results.

The 'constant scrutiny' isn't a problem. The problem is that the players, Marner specifically, didn't do what was expected and what he was paid for. So they didn't get the adulation, the legacy, the 'god status' that they felt entitled to. They are getting called out instead. And Marner specifically is showing that he can't handle the pressure on the ice or off of it. He's wilted on the ice for years, and now he'll run away off of it as a free agent.

'what's best for Marner'. Give me a break, Jonas. Marner has been doing what's best for Marner since he was drafted. Taking the money and flopping in the playoffs. Getting paid bank while paying back nothing to the fans when it matters.

Bye Marner. Don't come back.

Just gonna say it again: I'd run it back. A few tweaks aside, this is a good teams. I think a lot of Leafs fans owe them an apology to be honest. They're all likeable IMO and I'd like to see this group win.

Most fans aren't masochists thankfully. If there was a ever a group that needed to be blown up it's this core 4. How may years of failure are acceptable to you, 10, 20 the rest of your life? What brings you happiness with this team? Regular season success doesn't cut it for the majority of fans... thankfully.

You could go back in my post history and copy/paste this exact thing from previous years. I said and believed it for a long time. Winning is hard, and they made it to 7 against a good team bla bla bla.

I can't stand it anymore. Fans don't owe these fools an apology. We've been paying for tickets, streaming, jerseys, merch. We've been holding up our end of the bargain from the start. We've been cheering, posting, reading, road-tripping, invading other teams' arenas. We're doing everything a fanbase is supposed to do. We don't owe them anything.

I don't want a likeable team, which they aren't anyway! I want a winner. Sign Marchand and Bennett, if they can win in Blue and White. Fire these "likeable" losers into the sun. That game 7 was a disgrace. I never once saw Marner on the ice and thought "he's going to do something to get us in it". Because he folded like Suparman on laundry day, yet again.

I won't be fooled again. Bye Marner. Don't come back.

People talking about player trades clearly didn't listen. This is likely about Shanny getting dropped.

Good start.

After Shanny is dropped, I hope the roster gets put in a garbage disposal. Because that's what matters most. They changed GMs and coaches during this era. The players have gotten off easy. Let Marner walk, buy out Rielly, and don't stop there.

seems likely if they are delaying the meeting.

i hope we keep Tre but who knows what they're thinking down at the vault right now
There may be a scenario where Keith Pelley has been doing due diligence behind the scenes on a new president of hockey ops and so that person might want to completely start fresh and hire his own people

Tre has done okay but he might just be caught in the wrong time

There is a closed door meeting with management tomorrow.

Just a reminder. Shanahans contract expires June 30th.

With this team, temper expectations. Always.

Even if they replace Shanahan with new leadership, there’s always that “need some time to see first hand what they have to work with” narrative.
That’s it exactly. Ok, say Shanahan goes and there is not President. Then Pelley says to Tre give Marner whatever he wants to stay. Exactly how are we changing course.
Shanny needs to go but exactly who has looked at this for 9 years and says that can’t get it done?

You look at the size of that front office, is it even possible to canvass all the hockey minds and ask them, “did you really believe this team could win”. I’d love to be a fly on the wall.

Well you fall on your sword right? I'm sure MLSE probably doesn't like being held a gun point from the Marner camp. You can cave into his demands, or you can lose a top winger in the NHL for nothing. That was self inflected from Shanahan. Either way both aren't a a good situation to be in.

"Fans don't owe these fools an apology."

You don't think the guy that threw a beer on the bench owes them an apology? Those are the fans I'm talking about.

Knowing the leafs, they’ll just run it back. People will marvel at their stars in November, and someone will make a pass to the open guy in the slot, facing no pressure, in an international game and everyone will say “Things will be different this time!”
