Speculation: Chris Johnston "An atom bomb could drop"

Some of you guys are getting way ahead of yourselves.

There's not going to be any Matthews or Nylander trades.

They're gonna try next year with a less top heavy core, retool the depth and see how goes. Gonna already be a huge culture shift with big leadership figures on the team in Marner and Tavares leaving (hopefully Rielly too).

Just remember when the end of season presser happens, that if it was up to MLSE Mitch would've been re-signed months ago to an 8-year $100 million deal with a full NMC.

And what that implies is that the team was 100% okay with running it again EXACTLY as is (minus perhaps Tavares) regardless of how these playoffs went.

Which means - and really hope this hits home with someone, anyone here - that if Mitch were to say today that he's thought about it and wants to finish what he started here, it's an absolute lock MLSE would have that 8 year extension in his hand within minutes.

Last time I checked we still have one of those guys signed.

Am I ready for life without Marner and Tavares? Absolutely.
Its sports .players leave .just have to make sure your gm and president are on the same page
Treliving saw johnny geaudrau walk for free
Didnt want tkatchuck to do ii to him
He tried to deal marner for a player as good or better ,marner refused
This is life when u knew before last july 1st he wants close to 15 mill
13.8 he turned down

I care less about winning it all than I do about watching and cheering for a Leafs team that I can be proud of... I want players who embrace/understand the market..who know that the "pressure" is only to be warriors for their fans, teammates and the logo..guys like Clark, Tucker, Gilmour, Domi, Roberts, Sundin didn't win shit but they are beloved by this market... Win or lose I loved cheering for my team back then...I'm so sick of the "pressure" of this market narrative being an excuse for these flopdicks or the reason why noone wants to play here....it's just not true.. This fan base, historically, has shown extreme loyalty, patience and reasonable expectations..we know how hard it is to win the cup...so we reward "try"...
AM and MM can go... Ice a team I can be proud of, with personality and character and I will be happy...rant over

It’s always next year, enough of this bullshit change needs to happen now…….
So trade your captain, your best playoff performer over the last few years and Mo and let JT/MM walk.
Did any fans actually listen to the Florida players and coaches?
We scorched earth this team we will be set back 10 years and players will not sign here.
Im ready for Willy and Matty to ask for trades and walk away from this team, you cant replace them and what will the Toronto media do for the next 10 years with a crap non playoff Leaf team? Media and fans have made Toronto unbearable and now players and coaches of other teams are calling it out.
It will be awesome watching Mitch/Willy/Matty win once they leave just like Bozak,Phil and many others

It should happen (doing more than JT, Marner, Shanny leaving)

Do I think it does? No. Because this org. still runs as a business first.

But this team needs a clean sweep of deleting core 4 and rielly and going in a totally different direction

I dont think Toronto would trade Matthews while injured. They will expect him healed and playing.
That's what a rational organization does, agreed.

But he was healthy enough to go to the Four Nations and healthy enough to play every game of the 2025 playoffs.

I think every sane GM is looking at this as a buy low moment knowing full well it could be a potential homerun, and there's enough evidence to suggest, Matthews is, well, healthy enough to be acquired.

If Matthews wants out, that will spark a bidding war. Question is: Are we there yet? If we are, we have to work according to our timeline, because Matthews remains a tier 1, top 5 asset in the league and shouldn't be moved for anything less than a Kings ransom (no pun intended).

Edited to say: Truth be told, I don't know if I'm ready for large changes. I see the incremental improvement but see the increments as so minute as not to make a difference in future aggregation. This is going to be one hell of a hangover.

A franchise C that disappears when the pressure is on in the playoffs? A franchise C that throws his teammates under the bus?
a bunch if mind readers out here taking all that from one quote where he could've easily meant himself in group of "passengers"

You go back to the well with a center like that hoping they figure it out, Detroit did it with Yzerman, Colorado did it with McKinnon and his game 7 disappearing acts as well.

To me the bomb should include :

- Trade Reilly
- Do not resign Marner
- Trade Domi
- Trade Kampf, Robertson, Jarnkrok for anything
- Do not resign Tavares unless it is for under 6 million a season.

Potentially that is changing 1/3 of your lineup. And they are key pieces in some cases.

Forwards to bring back - Matthews, Nylander, Knies, Laughton, McMann, Lorentz, Holmberg

Dmen to bring back - Tanev, McCabe, Benoit, Carlo, OEL, Myers

Goalies to bring back - Stolarz, Woll

Knies-Matthews-?????
???? - ???? - Nylander
McMann - Laughton - ????
Lorentz - ???? - Holmberg

????? - Carlo
McCabe - Tanev
OEL - Benoit
Myers

If you bring Tavares back:

Knies-Matthews-????
???? - ???? - Nylander
McMann - Tavares - ????
Lorentz - Laughton - Holmberg

Florida was trolling Leaf Nation, and the fact that 88 is the closest thing we have to a playoff warrior speaks volumes, the core needs to be gutted now…….

Lol how?
Those are both low hanging fruit with contracts up. Shanny already was a dead man walking and ppl wanted him gone 3 years ago. Marner isn't shocking if he's gone.

The atom bomb would be firing Tre or trading Matthews but neither of those will happen. Johnston said last year 99.9% they are trading a core piece lol.

The difference with those guys is they had they that next gear come playoff time. While it took them awhile to win they still drove the play most nights in the playoffs.

My issue is at 28 Matthews isn't all of a sudden going to find that next level. For a guy who's not only captain but the star player, he should be leading this team. For the amount he's paid, he should be driving the play like McDavid does.
McDavid may not always score but every time he's out there you notice him.

Mathews rarely drives the net or drives the play. He plays the same in the regular season except it works in the regular season due the teams they play.

Any player who sees this team collapse in the playoffs this many times, and doesn't sign here because we ran those players out of town, is not a player that we want.

Weakness is a stench that keeps the strong away. Hard-chargers go where they can be with other hard chargers. The Leafs are a country club, where we have attracted country club players and mercenaries. Who wanted to sign here after this group lost to a zamboni driver???

the is straight up revisionist history when it comes to Yzerman. I distinctly remember much the same being said about him during playoff runs.

McKinnon won nothing until Makar got there and even then they have the notorious game 7 choker title we just don't hear about it because no one cares about hockey in colorado like they do in Toronto. Good thing they won a cup though otherwise they'd be another team that never got out of the second round.

in the Stanley cup final McDavid had 3 games where he showed up and his team won 2 of those, the rest of the games he was draped on by Barkov like Draisatl. they ran roughshod through the west and then met up with florida and got silenced.

All of these guys have marquee playoff moments without winning cups (not including mackinnon who won a cup) that's why you go back to the well with a guy who continuously gets d zone start times at like 55% of his draws versus McD and Mack and has to have a winger who is allergic to scoring goals.

Not at all surprising. What does surprise me is this wasn't done before now. I guess they wanted to see if Berube could get more out of the forward group. But the make up of this forward group is incapable of playing Berube hockey. If you watch how the Blues won their cup with him you will be hard pressed to find any similarities with this roster.

It's quite clear brawn still wins in this league. The mix of brawn V soft skill in the leafs forward group doesn't work. Too many guys not willing to play in the hard places and throw the body. They were out matched physically by the sens in Round 1 by a fair margin and luckily those OT goals didn't go the other way. Florida wore them down by game 7. I saw every single leaf player lose puck battles in game 7 because they were avoiding physical play.

This team has been soft for almost 10 years. Has the organization finally opened its eyes to it? Doubtful.

Hiring a dump and chase coach who preaches accountability, for a roster that isn't suited for dump-and-chase hockey & who have grown up within a culture where accountability doesn't matter, was such a bizarre and awkward thing to experience this year.
