Speculation: Chris Johnston "An atom bomb could drop"

Thanks for clarifying.

Shanny, Tre and Berube all going to get the axe?
I would keep Tre and Berube.

I would keep Auston if he wants to stay, owe him if he doesn’t. 0:chance I would keep Mitch. We need Willie for 2 on 1s with McDavid.

Morgan - not sure. Certainly didn’t like his game yesterday.

Whoever it is they are guaranteed to win the cup or drop 20 points on us in the playoffs it’s just the way of the leafs

There are stylistic reasons why I'd move on. But I really don't want a new president to waste time "appraising the situation" then deciding he's "not his guy"

Get your own guy right from the jump and get going.

We get fleeced KEEPING this motherf***er.
Instead of getting at least a top prospect and a first, Marner is going to walk for nothing (horrible asset management). Trade Matthews for pennies on the dollar, no real farm system and no first round picks on the horizon, good luck trying to get players to come here. And good luck making the playoffs for the next decade.

Let’s see how this fanbase likes that.

CJ has chucked a bomb shell report after every loss for a few years now. I remember one year he said "there's a big time American player the leafs are trying to trade for that will make everyone excited"

No idea who he meant but we didn't do anything that summer lol

This is true. Though I do think he has his finger on the pulse about MLSE related news more so than any other reporter at the moment

That's a spicy strawman!

Yeah I can't see Tre going anywhere as he hasn't had alot of time to put his stamp on the team, and the moves he's made have been pretty positive. Carlo retained at 2 years X 4 is decent. Laughton will be a decent add for another year. D is mostly set and locked in and alot better, except to GET RID OF REILLY whatever it takes. You know Tre likes bigger and beefier everywhere and hasn't had alot of chance to upgrade the forward group. I can see Marner and JT gone, adding some size and snarl up front and solidify the top 9 depth with the cap savings. Berube also clearly deserves another year after just one.

Maybe they sell high on Nylander?

Wouldn't be a popular move but his value is extremely high right now.
He hss a full no trade clause so Willy isn't moving unless he approves, which he might just do. I get the feeling that Berube loves his talent but dislikes his casual approach.

He is a defensive liability in heavy games and that Second Line was exposed against the Panthers. Unless he gets a break in the playoffs, he is largely inconsequential.

The problem is, it's a damned if you do damned if you dont situation. Losing both Marner and Willy in the short term would make it far less likely that they make the playoff (depending on what they get in return).

So Chris talking about an "atom bomb" means basically, "Leafs walk away from Marner and JT and Shanahan is fired". This wouldn't surprise anyone after this playoff run.

In the video, he's talking about the management, not the roster. Shanahan obviously but he's also saying Tre may be out too.
Hard to make sense of that.

Both because Tre has been surprisingly good, and because when he was hired there seemed to be a pretty reasonable consensus that he would be rather limited to achieve major success until his third season.

Wait, no assets for 16 and trading an injured Matthews guarantees we make the playoffs next year? Really? With what? You going to call the Free Agent Fairy and make sure she sends everyone here on July 1? Players aren’t exactly banging down the door to come to Toronto.

Marner has to go. JT, Rielly as well. But this is the worst time to trade AM. THE worst.

Ever heard of the term buy low, sell high?

All that to say, I have a funny feeling Matthews is going to want out anyway. Just a hunch.

Thanks for clarifying.

If they can Brad than it is clear that it is management who are the bloody idiots. They would have canned him for not getting a deal done with Marner and/or for asking him to waive his NMC. I would have asked him too. Before that, I would have traded him well before the NMC kicked in.

Unless, they gave Brad the green light to trade Marner and he and Berbue decided "naw, let's see how he does". but I doubt that. The best gift Leafs ownership could give their fans is to sell their team to a private billionaire. Maybe Gretzky can get a team of billionaires together and give this franchise hope. This corporate culture that encourages low performing and a clubhouse is never going to work.

He did overpay at the deadline and that's what I was worried about. However, ownership has wanted this for years, grasping at straws for players who don't deliver when it matters.

Marchand basically denied the Leafs any success for half of their playoff runs. Insulting to think any team would have so little price as to allow this.

Regardless of what happens, it is time for Shanahan to be relieved of his duties as President after 11 years. He hired and fired many coaches, and constructed the roster the way he envisioned it for many years with pathetic results (missed playoffs, first round exits, and embarrassing Game 7 performances like last night). The buck stops with Shanahan. After 11 years it is time to go in a different direction.
I always got the feeling Shanny was effectively relieved last summer and Tre/Berube took over - just waiting out his contract.

Tre taking both roles seems likely.

No

Shanny promised the core four no changes would be made with them.
