Speculation: Chris Johnston "An atom bomb could drop"

Regardless of what happens, it is time for Shanahan to be relieved of his duties as President after 11 years. He hired and fired many coaches, and constructed the roster the way he envisioned it for many years with pathetic results (missed playoffs, first round exits, and embarrassing Game 7 performances like last night). The buck stops with Shanahan. After 11 years it is time to go in a different direction.

Tre deserves more time without Shanny influencing things. If they fire Berube, who is a better option? The best one now works for Anaheim.
Quennville was never an option to restart his coaching here. It would've been a sideshow.

But I do know, this Carlyle-esque "everlast" hockey is not going to work.

Matthews trying to call out "passengers" was an absolutely wild statement coming from him. I can't believe these are the guys management believed in so much lol
Matthews doesn't do wild.

I think it was controlled and purposeful.

That Marner snap agreed with the relay felt like it was something he understood immediately. I don't think that's the function of the game. I think that's a function of them talking and using that term privately for a while, to whatever planned or unwitting end.

But Matthews...wild? Nope. He's a pretty cool customer and very good at knowing where the exits are in any given situation.

Id.be just fine if they decided to rebuild.the entire front office. Would be okay Maybe holding onto Pridham, and the new head of scouting hasn't had a chance yet to make their mark. But they need to purge most of Shanny's fingerprints from this team.

With no 1sts until 2028, they're not going to decimate the roster - so don't expect that. But don't blink if Marner and JT end up walking + a revamp of a fair amount of the forwards and maybe an attempt to ask Reilly to waive

The fan base will accept a complete reset, this is the time. These guys are damaged beyond repair here, just acknowledge it and move on. We had great leadership pieces around them this year, it doesn't matter they fall apart. Everything and anything should be on the table.

It's over, I think everyone understands that now.
Well said.

I've always considered you to be pretty level-headed, so I know you didn't come to that opinion lightly...and you're right.

Well...

I think it would have to be Matthews because his comments, are typically measured.

I don't think it was accidental that he threw others under the bus.

I think he knows Marner, who punctuated Matthews comment, is gone, and who knows...maybe he's looking for a place that would accommodate them both?

I dont think Toronto would trade Matthews while injured. They will expect him healed and playing.

Here’s a question, can Marner stop the Leafs from trading his rights because of his NMC?

Maybe they sell high on Nylander?

Wouldn't be a popular move but his value is extremely high right now.
But if you DID trade him, you have to replace those 45 goals in the regular season, and honestly, without his production against Ottawa, they may have not even beaten Ottawa in round 1.

If you trade Nylander and Matthews is still here, is the defacto leader and captain of this team, I don't see how you are much better unless you get a historic, crazy return for Nylander.
