CHL to NCAA Commits

Interesting story from North Dakota:

A lot of us have wondered about the education angle ...

Schlossman: NCAA teams are running into roadblocks with some CHL players
Since when does the NCAA care about academics…just joking…kinda

Is this something that is going to have a real, significant effect this year? Is it pretty black and white? Or are there “loopholes” that can help get these guys admitted?

Regardless, as the article states, in a year or two all CHLers will probably be taking the required pre-requisite courses.

I think the top guys at top schools don't have to worry about academics. The one-and-done guys.

But, there are some top players who do 3 years before moving to the NHL.

Your 3rd and 4th line guys need their degree, because they're not going to the Show.

Im wondering if we will see quite a few guys who have signed LOIs leave late to go NCAA
It's not easy to get out of an LOI.

From LOI FAQ:

9. Can I nullify the Letter of Intent?

Yes, but by mutual agreement between you and the U SPORTS school. A Release from a Letter of Intent can be obtained in accordance with Policy 40.20. If the institution does not grant a Release from the Letter of Intent, you may appeal for Release to the Eligibility Committee if extenuating circumstances warrant.

10.Is an institution required to grant a Release if I ask for it?

No. Just as the Letter of Intent is a voluntary agreement, granting a Release is voluntary in nature. If an institution denies your request for a Release, you may petition the Eligibility Committee for such a Release. In order to appeal to the Eligibility Committee, you must follow the procedures outlined in U SPORTS Policy 40.20.2

Does the NCAA recognize and enforce USports LOIs? I figured it was just between USports teams and going to the NCAA after signing a LOI would be similar to signing in the ECHL or European pro league after signing a LOI.

Good point. I don't know the answer. One would think the LOI would mean something, but I could be wrong.

Just a quick note from the academic side, regarding CHL players looking south of the border and interested in pursuing aviation: there's quite a range of schools to consider in the recruiting process (Ohio State, UND, BGSU, Western Michigan, Omaha and Alaska-Anchorage).

Provides some additional options beyond Waterloo, Mount Royal and Western in USports.

Great for these kids if they have the dedication and can make it work. UND Captain Louis Jamernick just finished a 5-year NCAA career while earning his commercial and instructors certifications. Jacob Steinman will be starting at Bowling Green in the fall in the commercial aviation program. William Rousseau's original plan was to play at Omaha before his path led him to the AHL and already has his private license.
