CHL to NCAA Commits

It's one thing for CHL overagers to go to the NCAA...but if they start poaching the 17-19 year old mega stars, the CHL will have no choice but to respond somehow.
As an aside...I am torn about how NIL money has changed college sports. Part of me is all about these college athletes getting reimbursed for their talent and the revenue they help bring to their school. But then part of me thinks all the NIL money (as well as the transfer portal) is ruining college sports...there's something about seeing these "amateur" players jump around to multiple schools and going to the highest bidder that really seems to go against the spirit of college athletics. I know we have mentioned it here many times...but the NCAA increasingly seems to care more about the athlete than the student. *end 'old man yelling at cloud' rant*
I don't know if there is a compromise somewhere between the two points of view...but I feel things are going to get worse before they get better.

NIL is big in football and basketball. No hockey players getting millions. The transfer portal is "interesting". I think Western Michigan had 6 transfers. Every team gains/loses at least that many. There are well over 100 players in the portal now.

Some Big Ten schools are throwing major money at top Canadian Hockey League players, who will be eligible for college hockey beginning this fall.
Superstar Gavin McKenna, the projected No. 1 overall pick in 2026, is fielding massive Name, Image and Likeness offers. If he goes to college, he will likely enter next season as the Hobey Baker Award frontrunner — which is saying something considering 2025 winner Isaac Howard of Michigan State is planning to return to school. I'm not sure how he can get NIL money if he's on a student visa.

I see the CHL is changing their import rules so that each team can now carry three (instead of the current limit of two). Not sure what the trickle-down effect will be, if any, for U Sports, but there could potentially be 60+ fewer CHL roster spots available to North Americans.

I’m going to guess the only impact on U Sports would be that they are getting the same players but from different leagues
From Xwitter: "Aidan Park’s season with Green Bay (USHL) ended Tuesday. He is now signing with WHL Calgary Hitmen and joining them for Game 5 of WHL playoffs Friday. Park (No. 94 in Central Scouting draft rankings) will play for Michigan this fall."

They drafted him in 2021. Not much different from calling a guy up from you Jr A affiliate, which this kinda is.
I'll be curious to see if there is any pushback here. Can't imagine USA hockey loves the idea of 80 (No idea what the actual # is) or so Canadians suddenly taking NCAA roster spots from American kids.
I think the number of NCAA commitments is close to 100. But it does impact in the development aspect for USA Hockey.
NCAA Hockey is likely to become the next pipeline for the majority of North American pro hockey players. Currently 95% of pro football players and 85% of pro basketball players come from NCAA programs. With the explosion of talent level in the U.S. and the NCAA decisions to allow CHL players, transfers and NIL funds, the game has changed.
NCAA D1 hockey is becoming more competitive and popular. The increased exposure and revenue will only grow the game across the country. It makes sense that superstar’s like McKenna, Celebrini, Mcdavid, etc.. will benefit from playing against next level competition and the NCAA will be just that.

Im hearing it will be close to 200 CHL kids going south for next season. I also think we will see more euro prospects going to play NCAA hockey as it is now going to be the uncontested best place to play before turning pro. Not sure what USA hockey can do, will be interesting to see

I don't think that's an issue at all. The main issue I think USA Hockey will be focused on is ensuring that the USHL does not play second fiddle to the CHL. I expect a USHL-CHL agreement to be their top priority, so they can keep more American players south of the border.
But, in order for that to happen, there will be some kind of "collusion" where the CHL agrees not to draft too many US kids.

Wow - leave your USHL team, join your WHL (CHL) team then enroll and attend a D1 NCAA program in the Fall. That's crazy.

Reading the recent posts: I'm getting the feeling, due to the introduction of NIL, that the D1 league, which has been jockeying with CHL as the top development league is going to get the talent and become the top league. They are already syphoning OA talent from USPORTS, the CHL is next.
This will in-turn drive US kids to the CHL (or Jr. A. leagues) as they get boxed out of NCAA options and now we have USHL in 3rd with Jr.A., CHL for 1-2 years in 2nd place and NCAA in top spot. The draft in 2-3 years will be telling.
This fall will be crazy; players waiting out teams, teams not sure who's coming, players switching at the last second, ...

NCAA is not going to take 16 or 17 year olds so they'll still go to the CHL. In a year or so, the NCAA won't be taking many CIS players because they'll have their CHL pipeline established.
