CHL to NCAA Commits

Zach Edey got NIL money. Not a lot compared to other high-profile athletes, but a few hundred thousand. That's definitely nowhere close to what he would've gotten if he was American, but there are definitely loopholes that can lead to some money for international athletes. Fair to assume as time's gone on athletic departments and agents (is anybody still even pretending they're "family advisors?") have gotten better at exploiting those, and will continue to do so.

How much money would a Canadian-born hockey player in the NCAA get? Depends on the school, and probably not "a lot." More than they'd get in the AHL or ECHL (or CHL... or at UNB)? Again, would depend on the school and player, I'd guess.

I had to look up Zach Edey. Being a B-ball player, I would expect him to get money, regardless of nationality. I would suspect that US born NCAA hockey players aren't getting a lot of money compared to football, basketball and the female gymnast at LSU who gets over 4 million.

He signed an NIL deal with a Purdue collective called the Boilermaker Alliance. Made a few hundred thousand as a pitchman for some Canadian charities. He's on the collective's advisory board now, touts the money he got from it as one of the reasons he came back for his senior year!

Saw that. Quite the effort from Purdue to syphon money to Edey through Canadian charities.

For as long as this loophole remains open, it's possible that some Canadian players would be offered money.

Edey's value is in a different stratosphere than any Canadian hockey player, however. NCAA Basketball is a revenue machine for a school like Purdue, whereas even for top programs like Michigan hockey is not much more than a break-even proposition. Outside of a team like Michigan taking swing at a Gavin McKenna caliber player, I will believe it when I see it.

I mentioned McKenna from a hockey development perspective, only.
He won't make any money playing NCAA.
He probably makes 6 figures now playing in "The Hat".

I completely agree with you. I mentioned McKenna to illustrate the caliber of Canadian player it would take for an NCAA Hockey program to even consider pursuing the type of loophole they offered Edey. But a player of McKenna's caliber will take his NHL ELC (for ~$1M) and make that plus endorsements, etc.

But, if he's not NHL ready, he'll get sent back to Junior and won't get a salary but will keep any signing bonus.

G - Reid Dyck (Swift Current, WHL) to Colgate

The CHL -> NCAA commitments have definitely slowed up. Wonder if we’ve reached the end of the line, or it’s just because the CHL playoffs are in progress?

I think there will be many more. I think the slow down is because of the NCAA transfer portal being open right now. Also, I think youre right, the CHL playoffs probably are a factor aswell. Could be wrong but that's my guess.

Good point about the portal…teams might want to wait and see how that plays out first. Trying to keep up with all the transfers is dizzying…

Was just having a look at the results of the OHL priority draft (so far) and the amount of American players taken is substantially higher than last year. 16 in the first three rounds this year, 3 in the first three rounds last year. Everything is a little bit different now.

Not sure where to put this, so I'll put it here. The OHL draft this past weekend saw a record of 81 US born players taken. Normally, the numbers are single digits. Obviously the NCAA rule change has a lot to do with this as players know they can play higher level hockey than Jr A and still go to an NCAA school later. The winner here is CHL and their fans as they will see good players. The losers are Jr A leagues, notably USHL who won't get these guys and CAN players who would have been drafted into the OHL but will now have to play Jr A.

Yeah I completely agree. USHL is going to lose its top 2 American guys on every team... Will be interesting to see if we see some guys who would have played USNTDP now go play in the CHL instead as it will be the undeniably stronger league now in my opinion.

For must Jr.A leagues it’s a loss , for the MHL , QJHL and other leagues that generally don’t send kids to Div.1 …it might be a gain, adding guys who are squeezed out of the CHL. Those two leagues in particular seem to have operated more as a QMJHL minor league and pathway to USports and D.3 than a pathway to D.1

I believe Josh Henry is the first D.1 commit from the MHL since Josh Nadeau and he went to the BCHL before playing at Maine.

Henry Mews to Michigan
We’ve seen all the chest puffing from CHL people about how they are going to get all the best junior players now … I hope they are prepared to start potentially losing there stars at 18-19..

Can’t say I’m a big fan of the CHL and can’t say I would complain if this happens lol…

For any of you that a subscribed to the Athletic , interesting article on him before the draft last year.
