CHL to NCAA Commits

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Just did a quick add and I have 84 CHL commits.
So a little under 100 left … not sure how many of those guys would be available/want to play CIS..

That available CHL player pool will likely be made larger with guys who don’t want to play tier-2 as 20 year olds .

In other news…sounds like the WHL will be adding two new teams over the next two years.
Not only two teams, two BCHL teams. Penticton and Chilliwack….

No one has been hit harder by the NCAA rule changes than the BCHL… I’m really curious if they come crawling back to Hockey Canada eventually or what happens … Entire business model was built around being the Canadian pipeline to Div.1 hockey …. Crazy times at all levels of hockey .

Did a bit of a dive into the current situation with the CHL, USports and the NCAA on the first day of the " USports offseason". This is based on 2004 only CHL overagers as of around March 1st. I have also made two assumptions. One is that any US born CHL OA player will return to play on home soil and the second is that any European players (9) in the CHL will turn pro, return home, or go to the NCAA. All are better options than USports in my opinion.

Total amount of CHL players available: 176.
(Ottawa, Moose Jaw, Kelowna and Regina Pats only carried 2 OA's each).

CHL OA's going to the NCAA: 82
(Q-18, OHL-29, WHL-35)

CHL OA's USports commitments: 7
(AUS 5, OUA 1, WHL 1)

CHL OA's from the US, European Imports & signed pro's: 24
(Q-3, OHL 11, WHL-10) I've basically taken them out of circulation from a USport availability perspective.

Remaining CHL OA's available to pursue USports, NCAA or pro ranks in North America or Europe as of March 24th: 63.
(Q-28, OHL-18 and WHL-17)

Of the 63 players, there is a minimum of 10 players that will go pro or NCAA in my estimation. Guys like Verreault, Rousseau, Thomas, Jelsma, Alfano, Wiesblatt are too good for USports! Others have been drafted and remain unsigned (ie Dalyn Wakely & Max Graham) and NHL teams have until July 1st to sign them.

As mentioned on this thread many times, there're a ton of USport roster openings to fill and not a lot of CHL bodies to fill them. The influx of Junior A players, ECHL players, and transfers from the NCAA (?) and USports will be huge. The impact of NCAA announcement last November is a much bigger than I anticipated.

As AUS Fan has mentioned more than once, there's still a lot to unfold before us and the full impact may not be felt for years. But teams and fans better embrace the changed landscape. It should be interesting.

Hope this makes sense!

Great work!

It will be interesting to see how many of the NCAA committed guys + remaining uncommitted CHL OA’s end up going pro over the summer?

Maybe I’m being overly optimistic, but perhaps some of the NCAA commits decide to go pro and we end up seeing them back in Canada a year down the road.

My one hope for the changes is more parity. Sure I love that UNB wins as much as they do but I’d be lying if I said things haven’t become a little stale , every year feels like Groundhog Day.

Maybe like the early 2000’s. Starting in the 2000-2001 season the AUS had six different teams in six years win the title…STU/SMU/UNB/X/Acadia/Moncton. Factor in Dal making the UCup one of those years and every AUS team except for UPEI made Nationals over a six year stretch. Couldn’t even imagine something like that happening now.

Excellent breakdown on the player movement. Thanks.

Evan Friesen Wenatchee (WHL) signs with Utah (ECHL)

Winnipeg native ... played 1 game with Utah last season, eliminating the NCAA as an option. Will be interesting to see if he ever plays USports.

If he was on an ATO would he not still be eligible to play NCAA? He wouldn’t have earned any $$$.. I’m confused by the new NCAA rule (Actual and necessary expenses)… Oliver Peer’s name was floating around around Xmas but I haven’t heard that rumour in a while so perhaps they are deeming one game of ECHL to count against you?
