"everyone" going to Michigan but yet nobody is committed. Even hearing they are backing off on Mews who seemed like the only confirmed one so far

Why would the CHL get worse when it is going to be able to pick off a bunch of talented younger guys who in the past would've bypassed it in order to remain NCAA-eligible? CHL wasn't crying when the NCAA's announcement came down. The nervousness was all from other junior leagues.

CHL will undergo some changes, will have to deal with some things, but CHL brass were quite optimistic that the talent levels and quality of play in their leagues would hold up just fine under the new arrangement. It's the other junior leagues that were concerned-- and for good reason, especially BCHL. They know that they're going to lose some talent to CHL.

One effect of D1 getting stronger is that some junior players will be waiting a little longer to make the move than they would've in the past.
 
Are American fans OK with all these Canadians taking college spots?
You'd have to think American development will suffer.

What fans? Its still a niche thing in terms of NCAA sports. The people that watch it now don't care where the players are from. They just want good hockey. The NCAA has been full of Canadians/Europeans for decades. It's not a American development system specifically.

It will just improve the quality of college hockey and therefore improve the development of the college players. The people who lose spots to "foreigners" are probably not NHL material. US soccer is steadily improving, and the colleges and academy teams are full of non-US players.

Lots of them. Especially big Cs like a Michael Rasmussen.

Not only do they over-dominate their D+1 year in the CHL, many times they had to burn their 19yr old year as well, playing limited minutes in the NHL, when they needed to be playing in the AHL….. but weren’t allowed to.

He’s a perfect example of a player who had nowhere to further develop for 2 years after being drafted. It’s why many times, we don’t see the NHL careers of big Cs blossom, until they’re 26-27 years old.

Those are the players who will be helped most by the new system. The Dach and Rasmussen’s of the world. Who in today’s system would go to the NCAA as 18 yr olds. Not be forced into the NHL too early, or burning years over-dominating in the CHL.

Michael Rasmussen is a bad example, he wasn’t close to dominating the WHL in his D+1. He had a great playoffs but plenty of players put up better D+1’s and aren’t ready for top minutes in the AHL.

Like mentioned, losing TOP tier guys in their second or third season will not be made up for by getting some more young Americans.

I'm not super sure about that besides the occasional casual audience that will watch a premier game or the Frozen Four if it ends up on TSN, which is how most people here "follow" CFB and CBB. Heck, most (relatively speaking) people in Canada are already just casual CHL fans or just follow the occasional player like the McKenna's or the Bedard's or the McDavid's during their D-1 or D years.

I don't know how many Canadians will be clamoring to watch, say, Nebraska-Omaha play Michigan Tech just because they recognize a few of the players.

They aren't clamoring to watch Val d'Or vs Charlottetown either. If given the option I could see more Canadians watching NCAA games, that is all I'm saying.

Dach is a bad one also. Chicago and Detroit were just stupid and rushed them when both were no where near too good for the WHL and needed another year. The biggest benefit potentially now for players who do end up NCAA is it will save them from being rushed by incompetent teams.

Yeah I imagine so. Wonder if we'll see expansion at the D1 level - could definitely see it becoming more attractive to universities if the league starts to get more eyeballs, which it should.

It's not gonna be football or basketball, but I think it'll get more national attention when freshmen like McKenna come in and torch the league.

Nobody knows what Canadian junior hockey is, so covering stories about Bedard dominating wasn't that compelling. But college sports are much more familiar in American households, so I think top prospects playing there will get more talk time in national sports media because the audience will have the context to actually understand that it's impressive for freshmen to dominate a college sport.

It'll probably continue to be niche, but viewership will almost certainly rise.

Literally this. There is a reason the CHL doesn't have a great tv deal and only the IIHF tournaments and the Memorial Cup get tv time.
