CHL Can Now Play NCAA - Changes Everything

Other than a couple markets in Maine, I can’t see the Q having success in any other markets in New England. NE is a very saturated hockey market. CHL would be 3rd fiddle after the Bruins and the countless amount of D1 teams across the region. Its a main reason the NAHL expansion east ultimately failed

Interesting that the article mentioned Portland and Manchester. Manchester no longer has a team and perhaps a Q team would work there. Portland has an ECHL team but maybe ownership wants to flip to the Q? I certainly can see Lewiston taking another stab at it but I think the league is looking for bigger markets.

I thought that Friedman had reported a couple of months ago that NHL had told CHL to put the kibosh on US expansion. Maybe it was just OHL? QMJHL wouldn't be going into the area where USHL teams are located so maybe it's not a big deal.

I believe that had more to do with USA Hockey refusing USHL teams flipping to the OHL. Apparently a meeting was held, not sure of what exactly was discussed but expect movement (expansion) in the near future.

I think the USHL was more caught off guard how quickly Muskegon/Youngstown/OHL moved on a league change. Now they’ve had a year to figure out what NAHL/new cities could be there to replace those 2. Might be more open to letting them leave.

Kristian Epperson (2006, OHL, Saginaw Spirit, one time Michigan commit) commits to Denver.

Huge, huge get. He's going to absolutely pop for the Pios and I think this raises my confidence in his draft stock, to be honest. Denver absolutely gets the most out of his ilk - unspectacular physical specimens with huge motors and big playmaking. That he's 6' and lacks explosive skating just means he fits right in with a lot of the guys they develop. He will be a great Devine replacement.

Feels like only a matter of time before Misa announces for the NCAA, if it was already a forgone conclusion, no? Saginaw is probably losing Parekh to the NHL (maybe I am optimistic here but when I see that Flames blueline, I think there is a spot for the taking), Epperson to DU, Chernyshov almost certainly to the AHL, Mangone and Oke aging out/to LSSU.

Saginaw will be brutal next year in the ohl - its all fun and games until every good player leaves chl either pre -draft or their draft year . I remember CHL guys were saying their would be a lot of loyalty for the development of players and most would stay in the CHL - that was funny . Only big winner will be USA college . Oh yea, it’s great in the CHL watching really young great players but it’s okay they leave right at their peak year for NCAA college - in the future every stud will leave draft year for College

as has been mentioned before, it’s going to be a few years before things settle. Some of these guys that are headed to the NCAA next season are going to hit a wall. Some of them will see that they need another year or two of junior. Others will thrive. It’s going to be a mixed bag.

USA truly is #1. Even with a wannabe dictator running the country, you can’t bet against them. Most Americans couldn’t care less about hockey yet they’re now consolidating the Canadian competition. Hope the CHL survives, but massive changes will have to occur (contraction). Congratulations, USA!
Ah yes, USA wins because more Canadians will be playing and taking up D1 spots over Americans from US junior leagues...? What logic to bet against for sure.

"Wannabe dictator." You're hilarious. Oh and I thought you couldn't talk politics in these threads, huh moderators?

I would go up to $16 mil for Marner. One thing I will say is that his contract will absolutely not be a comp for Celebrini and definitely not Smith and Eklund. He is a UFA. Celebrini would be buying out only 3 UFA years on his second contract. Celebrini’s comp will certainly be Bedard.

If he starts spending time with Marner, why are you assuming the team would be buying out any UFA years? All the 3 young players on Toronto signed 5 or 6 year deals coming out of their ELCs so whenever they get to the UFA years, instead of getting excess value on a AAV set 6 years previously, they were asking for a new extension and a pay rise.

Wrong thread lol

More 06’s in the OHL have signed ELC’s in the last couple of months than have fled to the NCAA. The ncaa was wise to make this move though, as USA hockey has stagnated and aren’t developing players at the rate necessary to maintain a competitive college hockey landscape. The 06’s outside of Hagens and Eiserman are very weak, the 07’s are next level bad and have 0 elite players, and while the 08’s look a bit stronger, not much elite talent there either. So they need to open the floodgates to Canadian kids. This move was necessary but will only further the regression USA hockey is on. Despite some elite talent produced lately by the US, the depth has never materialized and the overall program has stagnated. The NTDP won’t exist in 5 years, and according to some NHL scouts who cover the USHL, it was very close to be shut down next season.

The CHL is absolutely going to get younger. From my understanding, the NHL and PA have already worked out the issues of player retention/rights. The next thing coming down the pipe is AHL eligibility for CHL players.....so yes the CHL is going to get younger. The league will attract a ton of top end (young) talent as it will be seen as the league to be in and develop for both the NHL/AHL and the NCAA but it will lose their very best 19 year old players to the AHL, and then some to the NCAA.

Many of us had questions at the start of this thread as to how this will all shake out and now the answers are starting to come in.

So yes, the CHL will be that league, where for the most part all of the best 16, 17 and 18 year old players will be in but they are going to lose virtually all of their D+2 elite players (and even some D+1) and what are the fans reactions from the various fan bases going to be like? Will they still support a team like the London Knights with over 9k a game when Bonk, Cowan and Dickinson have moved on by their D+2 years????
The NHL better hope they do, as a drastically weakened CHL will be a disaster for the NHL.
