CHL Can Now Play NCAA - Changes Everything

mnhshockeytalk said 141 total CHL commits so far - then he asked at what point do we put a limit ? It will be interesting what the hit on the USHL will be or kids heading to college ? I wouldn’t be shocked that some big time college coach’s are pushing their commits to the CHL. I can see Michigan doing it and some other schools . This is why it will be interesting where say Michigan commits from ushl are playing next year . That’s why I asked on signing CHL because I ‘ve heard a lot interest in talk about some of top ushl 2007-2008 heading there but haven’t seen much from that group .

Of course a Minnesota based account talked about a limit, he's just aware that Canadians will take over. I see no problem with that if it helps increase the level of NCAA Hockey and gives CHLers a better development route instead of just rushing into pro before they're ready.

Wonder if a guy like Cole Huckins (2003, USports, University of New Brunswick, Calgary 2021 3rd rounder) would come down to the States.

Not privy to any of the names. UNB is a very good program so it would have to be at least a mid major (if you will) to entice a player like that and maybe some of those programs are doing exactly that.

Another 05. Was a first round pick in the dub. We are approaching the 145 mark for CHL commitments. I figured we might get to 100, never expected much past that. It is now apparent (not that many doubted it) that the CHL will become in the next season, the go to league for college recruitment.

This was inevitable. Not only is there a stockpile of solid four-year and five-year CHLers in USports, but there'll be a bunch more scholarship spots available now with a lot of programs opting in.

The two commitments from UNB so far are to Arizona State and Providence.

Location and educational quality of the potential outgoing/incoming schools will also factor into the decisions. And, whether the offer is full-ride or partial (they've already got the latter from CHL). The top players at UBC, for example, mostly are local kids. Probably they can live at their parents' homes to cut down or eliminate room-and-board expenses that aren't covered by most CHL scholarships-- and Vancouver's a nice place if you can afford to live there. UBC is a very good university. Drop everything to play hockey at Bowling Green? Dicey.

I think once you started getting commits from CHL the college coach’s are starting to panic , “ why don’t we have anyone ? what if they dominate and they question why we didn’t recruit any of them ?” typical herd behavior is what your are seeing a lot which is normal because lot of college’s are lower end or verge of getting fired( Michigan ) so its panic time . In addition , usually the late recruits in the USA have been Older USHL , BCHL , Nahl kids who are not really high end .

Their O/A pool has been thinned out no doubt. They are trying to mitigate those losses with more European talent and a large influx of American players who would not have played in the CHL were it not for the rule change.

On the flip side (and unrelated), with all these OAs signing, teams with extra players entering OA year and are worthwhile have players with way more value on the trade market.
 
See this link below - I'm surprised no one has mentioned this. Ferris St. of the CCHA conference released their schedule for next year and it looks like they will be playing in Plymouth, MI in what's called in the article the "NTDP Showcase". I haven't seen anyone in media mention this but I wonder if this year the CHL vs NTDP games will be at USA Hockey Arena and alternate back and forth every other year like how last year it was in Ontario.

The schedule is listed as Ferris playing the opening game vs "Canada U-18 Development" which I think means their CHL U-18 roster for the CHL vs NTDP series like last year. Interesting in how this could look going forward and an awesome example of the rule change and how we can see some really interesting hockey that we never thought possible at this time last year. Image a few years ago saying there's going to be a CHL draft eligible all star team playing an NCAA team, I don't care that Ferris is never one of the top 25 programs year in and year out, this will be really cool and I'm all for it.

Thx I’m waiting to when USHL just becomes the fourth league of the CHL and we get some cross over games during season and everybody goes for one cup at the end .

Never going to happen. USA hockey doesn't want to give up its top tier junior league so that its now under hockey Canada and Canada doesn't want to have a league in the CHL that doesn't answer to them.

Also, the USHL just couldn't join the CHL as is because there are players in the USHL whose CHL rights are currently held by CHL teams and then what would be the CHL-umbrella draft region for the USHL? The USHL getting all of America is a non-starter and none of the CHL leagues would want the USHL to be given parts of their respective Canadian region.

Dividing up new territories would be the easy part. Give the USHL the states west of the Mississippi. Western boundary at the Dakotas, Nebraska then to Colorado, NM and Texas. WHL still get WA, CA, AZ to recruit from. USHL would have MN, TX, CO, MO and the Dakotas as the major hubs to get players from.

Again the hard part (actually nearly impossible part) would be getting one of the governing bodies to blink first on handing over power.
