CHL Can Now Play NCAA - Changes Everything

I don't have a running count but most of the players are 2004s and some 2005s that can play OA but see the NCAA as an opportunity.

That being said some of them are going to be disappointed in their deployment, a lot of balls in the air here and no one knows how its going to shake out.
That's the other thing. If some of these guys don't like their situation, nothing stopping them from leaving for junior and then transferring the next season or signing pro (Noah Powell, Tyson Jugnauth).

Generally if you can't make an impact in NCAA, that doesn't bode well for your chances.

Some players will disappoint of course, but no different than at any stage as players move up levels.

Powell will probably go back to the NCAA at some point. Unless he really wants to grind in the A &/or the Coast straight out of junior; he needs more NCAA time IMHO

And generally if you don't do well in junior, you aren't ready for NCAA but William Horcoff helped himself with a change of scenery. It can work both ways to get out of a situation that isn't working for you.

Yeah every situation is unique, generally good to have options (although some players will mess that up by being too impatient, grass is greener, etc. but in general, that's their decision to make)

Yes , at what point does CHL start crying that their “ star “ players are heading to college ! This will hurt lot of teams competitiveness, attendance going forward . Then I wonder if Canadiens say why are USA kids on our teams when their Colleges are taking our best players . At the end I wouldn’t be shocked if everybody in Hockey would like to go back to old system .
WHL and OHL are cross-border leagues and QMJHL aspires to return to being one. And, about 30% of NHL players are American. Not many people are shocked/bothered that there are American players in CHL. There used to be more about a decade ago compared to recently. But the numbers took a noticeable uptick this past season and there'll be more Americans on their way.

There's no going back to the old system. In the face of NIL it was farcical that modest CHL stipends were considered to be some kind of disqualifying benefit and NCAA knew that it didn't have a legal leg to stand upon. The change was made and now everyone will need to adjust.

Only Glen Hefferan and USA Hockey are lobbying to go back to the old ways or at the very least place a cap on the number of Canadians playing U.S. college hockey.

"A bigger concern is the NCAA’s change in eligibility rules leading to Canadians potentially displacing Americans on college rosters. Hefferan and USA Hockey executive director Pat Kelleher both said they’d like to see the U.S. Congress cap the number of international players on college teams."

Arizona State*. And yes, I forgot he committed there recently

He entered the portal and then committed a couple of weeks ago, it was somewhat strange that he entered the portal as I do not believe he was registered as a student at Ohio St any longer. He's a decent player but not quite ready for the AHL on a full time basis, so his options were return to Oshawa as an O/A or go back to the NCAA.

What is becoming apparent is that while the CHL will only "lose" a handful of high end elite talent to the NCAA, their O/A pool will be taking a significant hit. Most mid to lower drafted players will opt for the NCAA as opposed to coming back as an O/A and one wonders what the CHL will decide to do with the whole O/A designation.

As previously mentioned, it is why they are increasing the number of imports to three.

I thought I previously posted this but I guess not. Hefferan and USA Hockey are getting no where with the NCAA so they are turning their attention towards Congress.
Hefferan and USA Hockey should develop more & better players/leagues if they want the NCAA to remain ~60% US, 30% Canadian, 10% European.

Pretty well much.....like I've been saying, lots of gnashing of teeth within USA Hockey and the USHL right now

Hopefully Congress tells them to f*** off. But with the morons in Congress, I wouldn't be surprised to see it gain some traction. Although with Pandora's Box being opened in the NCAA, I bet the government & NCAA will want to avoid lawsuits and throw this stuff out eventually. NCAA Hockey will be plurality Canadian very soon.

ZERO CHANCE of gaining any traction what so ever.

Lebret -2007 dmen from Shattick - Maine committ just signed WHL Tri - City today . I’ve been hearing rumbling on Kids from USHL but how does it work ? Do you need to go to CHL camp first to get a spot on the team and/or do they sign kids before it ? thx

If they are drafted, they remain property of whatever team picked them and it is up to that team to sign or not sign them. All others are free agents and any team can extend a contract offer to them.

Was originally drafted by Regina so they must have traded his rights to Tri City

Yeah I'm sure Congress cares about NCAA hockey. This is never happening

We'll see. Look at guys drafted in the second round out of USHL/NTDP; they almost all go to D1 immediately, they are good enough to play right away. They might not be considered elite NHL prospects at the moment but they are very prized recruits for NCAA programs (and prized players in the CHL); in the age of NIL, there will be financial incentives and I do not doubt the reports that some of the big schools have mid-high six figures of NIL $ to toss around. The CHL/NCAA battleground at age 18 isn't just for the super-elite and elite pro prospects.

yeah, we will see......

yeah, we will see......
And to be clear, it won't be anything like the lemming march from USHL/NTDP which are handmaidens to the NCAA. CHL is a different group of players; the current set all selected CHL under the knowledge at that time that they were eliminating their opportunity to play in NCAA. Many still won't be interested; some will be interested but will need time to get their academic requirements in order. But in future years, there will be more kids coming to CHL with the hockey ability, the motivation and the academics to move to D1 before they finish their non-overage eligibility.

You are 100 percent correct, and it's not because the CHL is a different group of players but because the entire CHL mindset is different. Yes, there will be many many more high end elite Americans choosing the the CHL over the U.S. domestic leagues/options, with the intentions of going to the NCAA. Will they change that CHL mindset???
