CHL Can Now Play NCAA - Changes Everything

I guess when you’ve been wandering in the woods for over a decade and finally find some success, you just want to unleash all that pent-up frustration. The “scUM” thing really adds that classic SpartanMag sprinkle to what was previously an intelligent conversation, but oh well.

There’s plenty of room for both programs to be successful. Just look at last year, when the teams met in the regional final in St. Louis after an epic Big Ten championship game at Munn.

Nightingale was a home run hire. He’s from the same place (Top of the Mitten) where I live for half the year. They’re a wonderful family, and he’s a great hockey mind. I’m not at all surprised he’s quickly turned MSU back into a solid program. He is somebody that any parent would feel comfortable sending their kid to play for, whether the goal was two-years and into pro, or four years as a depth piece, he will do a great job with your kid, on and off the ice.

That said, I wouldn’t throw dirt on Naurato. He’s had plenty of success himself, with a Big Ten tournament win and two Frozen Four trips in his first three seasons. It’s strange that’s somehow being framed as a failure.

The Michigan brand, the potential NIL money, and the extensive NHL alumni network definitely resonate with players and their agents. For a Division I athlete, especially one involved in NIL, there aren’t many places that combine compensation, campus culture, academics, and professional development like you get in Ann Arbor. You can call it arrogant, loudmouthed, or whatever, but it’s still going to be a big draw for a lot of people, and that is why UM is always brought up when it comes to potential CHL players coming in.

I mean how can they add him this late in the season?

On the OHL board, Kitchener fans said Valentini was watching from the bench during warmups so I'd expect that he will sign very shortly.
Win win for both players. Although the Chicago to Ann Arbor connection has worked out well for us, but I think he comes in more ready with a season in the OHL than he would coming from the USHL.

More game reps, and the CHL is a step up from the USHL, and makes the transition to the NCAA easier. I don't think the powers that be in the CHL will be angry with a situation like Valentini, who will presumably play a full season next year in addition to any games he plays in these playoffs, but I don't know if this Park situation is something that teams are going to want to see happen, high end college guys hitching a ride onto teams in the middle of the playoffs.

But yeah, this is going to take some getting used to, when I saw Park's name followed by "Calgary Hitmen" I had two decades of PTSD about losing players like John Gibson to the CHL, for a moment forgetting that this means nothing for his status for next season.

Wonder if the CHL opening up will allow your program to finally get another high end goalie to lead you back to glory. Ivankovic has been rumored to Michigan, although that may never materialize.

Park situation is a weird one, but probably more akin to a one-off. He had already been playing in USHL when the rule change happened, and he didn't want to abandon his team/potentially a good situation in the middle of the year. Now his USHL team is out, the team holding his CHL team is in and they said "hey want to play some games?" and he said "sure". It's basically same as Demidov playing for SKA in the KHL and now playing for Montreal in the NHL playoffs. Or honestly even Park himself appearing in USHL playoff games after his Prep School season ended in the past. It's a bit odd, but a win-win for Calgary and Park.

A team can bring any player on their protected list as an AP once the players' season ends. The only way that a kid like this would realistically be available would be if he were going NCAA the next year.

His USHL team would have to release him for this to happen (which they would for him to go NCAA next year). This is the rare win-win for the kid if he wants to play CHL.

I definitely think the Hitmen would do their due diligence try to keep him around next year, no matter how futile it may seem. They would have room for him to play a lot of minutes next year, fwtw.

Another wrinkle; if the Hitmen fully sign him, they must now be on the hook for some scholarship money, right? I think it might be an interesting case study on how that landscape will look moving ahead.

If and when the signing is announced, it'll be interesting to see what wording is used and if he's "signed" signed.

Here comes the "holier than though" Michigan fan right on Cue. What year did you graduate CMU?

He's going to Michigan for 2025-26

Central Michigan University, they don't have D1 hockey. Michigan schools that are D1 are Michigan, Michigan State, Western Michigan, Ferris State, Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech, & Northern Michigan.
Yes, I'm quite versed in all the D -1 hockey programs, I do need to brush up on my Mac football though... should have known...Central.

Ok not from Michigan or mid west so gotta ask what is CMU??? Michigan.
Central Michigan. Large school that many graduate from and notorious for being a party school. Seen as a “back up” school to some. It’s a thing that folks say you can’t be a Michigan fan if you didn’t graduate from there. It’s where the term Wal Mart Wolverine comes from. Meaning they get all their U of M stuff from wal mart and that’s the only connection they have to the university. It’s a dumb chirp. Idk. Some of us didn’t feel like going into $20,000 of debt. (SVSU grad btw).

Re; Aidan Park

In kind of a weird twist, the Hitmen deleted everything related to his signing at some point since posting yesterday morning, leading to me thinking that maybe something had fallen through and he wasn't joining the team. However, he's listed in the line-up for tonight's game so I don't know what's happened there.

It's definitely a crazy time for NCAA, that's for sure.

I see both sides of the argument regarding the portal and NIL deals, but the system the NCAA is in right now can't be sustainable forever. Especially for college hockey.
