CHL Can Now Play NCAA - Changes Everything

I think it'll change in the new/amended CBA. I think everyone drafted will have a 4 year rights holding period (excluding those drafted out of Russia which is still "indefinite"). So if Anaheim drafts Jake O'Brien and steers him to the NCAA for a year or two, they'd still have his rights until 2029 under my hypothetical CBA amendment for the rights holding period
This is entirely possible although there are various possibilities. I wonder if this might be part of the reason why some non-overage CHLers are waiting before announcing their NCAA commitment. They might be wanting to see how some of this stuff shakes out before making a firm decision on their next step. League and PA can't just settle this specific matter in the new CBA (which won't kick in until after the 2026 draft); there has to be a clarification/revision very soon.

Schlossman hypothesized that several younger CHLers might be sitting on silent NCAA commitments until the offseason, as they don't want to rock the boat of their major junior team in season, since it would be indicating they're going to leave before their junior eligibility runs out.

That is probably part of it, but more than half of CHL teams are eliminated now and still there's next to nothing in terms of non-overage announcements.

Crazy how much of an impact this may have for smaller programs that try to take advantage of it. Here at Michigan Tech we have these names lined up for next season already:

Ryan Abraham (Windsor)
Noah Reinhart (Val d’Or)
Brayden Boehm (Victoria)
Michael Cicek (Kelowna)
Carson Birnie (Calgary)
Reid Andresen (Wenatchee)

Allegedly still working on getting Rylan Gould (Swift Current) in next year as opposed to an overage season. Don’t have names but they’re in on several defenseman too. Completely transformational for our program

Abraham, Reinhart, Andresen, and Gould are all very solid IMHO and very good gets for a program like Michigan Tech. Certainly better than having to dumpster dive getting 20 year olds out of the NAHL.

Good for these kids too to have a chance so show case their skills more for a nhl contract and perhaps work towards a degree.

Be interesting to see if any light it up as Freshmen if they are swopped up by bigger schools in the transfer portal. That's what College Basketball has become.

Yeah I think all the predictions that the top 09 Americans were all going to flock to the CHL turned out to be a whole lot of nothing. Nice for the cuts though to have more options that won’t cost them ncaa eligibility. I’m sure it was always a tough option for kids that felt too good for prep school or whatever but were also thinking about college.

Not just freshmen transferring but also guys switching commitments before they start. Some 18YO drafted in the fifth round who is committed to a good second-tier school for his 19YO season, but lights up his junior league in an unexpected way in his D+1... here come the big-budget schools.

He’s verrrry friendly with the um staff. Um definitely thinks(actions say it too) are about to get a bunch of high end chl guys. We will have to see if it actually happens.

His point is the current coaching staff clearly hasn't been able to maximize the talent they've had
Michigan was mid af for most of 2023-24 but they got hot at the right time to get to the Frozen Four. I'll give Naurato some credit there. Michigan's problem for awhile, similar to Minnesota, is finding an elite tier 1 starting goalie.

They weren't really overflowing with talent this year. I know schools like Michigan reload more than rebuild typically but all the players that went to the NHL took their toll and outside of Hage they weren't overflowing with tons of NHL talent.
