CHL Can Now Play NCAA Change Everything

The Jack Willson decommitment seemed like an obvious case of Michigan wanting to open up a spot for a big name, likely from the CHL, so Mews coming in for 2025-26 absolutely fits. Would be a big get by Naurato after a couple weak classes/birthyears for Michigan's standards.

Has there been confirmation on how this effects AHL eligibility or UFA?

I remember reading that it is based of where they player was when they were drafted, but I think that was just speculation.

If a kid gets drafted out of the CHL then transfers to college, does he get to go UFA after 4 years?
If a kid gets drafted out of the CHL then transfers to college, can he go straight to the AHL after his freshman season?
If a kid gets drafted out of college then transfers to the CHL, does that mean he can't go to the AHL until his 20 year old season?

I would assume its just the same standard and it matters what league they had a contract with at the time of being drafted. So if you get drafted out of the CHL, but then go NCAA D+1, you still have to wait till youre 20 to go to the AHL.

4 year thing is probably where it gets muddy because currently if youre drafted out of the CHL you need a contract after just 2 years.

What about players drafted out of the USHL? They havent played a game with a college team, and also dont have a CHL contract.

I just am looking for definitive answers for a league source.

Would assume all of this will be clarified/changed in the new CBA. Considering that the CHL-NHL Agreement doesn't have the NCAA route in mind, the NCAA now opened up to CHLers will lead to new rules on all of this.

If you're drafting out of the USHL, you can go to the A at any time. Zemgus Girgensons being a prime example
Girgensons went straight from the USHL to the AHL. I mean someone that goes from the USHL to the CHL in their D+1. Are theyh now under the CHL->AHL agreement or not since they were in the USHL when they were drafted? And if they are under the CHL agreement, does that go away if they go to college?

If you go USHL to CHL you are not under any agreement because you were not drafted out of the CHL. John Carlson went from the USHL to the O to the A, wasn't forced to stay in major junior.

No one knows what will happen if you go CHL (17 year old season) to NCAA (18 year old season), presumably, you'd be eligible for the A in your 19 year old season, but all of these things will be rewritten, or the agreement could get ripped up, at least in its current form.

Makes sense. Thanks!

I wonder form players who were NCAA bound and have went to the CHL if they may stay more loyal the the CHL.

I’m a Kitchener Rangers fan and have two examples;

Jack Pridham was the first player to jump from the BCHL to the OHL after he had a commitment to Boston University. He has 51 points in 47 games this year for Kitchener. He was a 3rd round pick by Chicago last year. He would be an overage next season if he returned to Kitchener.

Christian Humphreys had 1 assist in 10 games played for the University of Michigan. He then decided to drop down the OHL and the Kitchener Rangers. He has 31 points in 27 games played. He would be 19 if he returned to Kitchener next year.

So would players sometimes be better off to stay in the CHL for Pridham he could have a dominant overage season in the OHL and make the jump to the AHL. If he goes the NCAA route I doubt he gets a top six role from the get go. He would have to earn his way up the lineup and most likely path would be two NCAA seasons. For Humphreys I feel like he is in the same boat as Pridham. If he goes back to the NCAA he most likely has a bottom six role to start. If he stays in the CHL he keeps getting top line minutes and lots of power play time.

Pridham is extremely committed to the NCAA. Getting an education seems to be very important for the Pridham family.

Humphreys is an interesting one and could certainly forego going back to the NCAA, but would assume the Avalanche would advise him to spend another year in junior and then head to the NCAA again in his 20 year old season. I don't think they have any interest in rushing any prospects to the A, solid risk of Humphreys failing and having to go to the Coast. Look at what we've seen with Oskar Olausson in the A, Avalanche would prefer for non elite guys to develop against age appropriate competition for longer.
