Yeah. Penticton is close enough to Kelowna that such a move would cost the Rockets from a public/media standpoint and from a corporate partnership standpoint. Their owner just happens to be the chair of the WHL board, so if they raise objections, it’s a good bet the move doesn’t happen. But there is a lot of antipathy between the two leagues and you could see the WHL swallowing Penticton just out of spite.

I live in the region and I don't think that the Rockets get much of their corporate/media/fan support from Penticton. Kelowna's population is about 4x greater and it's the corporate and media hub for the Okanagan. Plus, the Vees are a big deal-- the perennial powerhouse of the BCHL. They draw around 3000 fans per game and are the focus for that city, not the Rockets. Adding Penticton would give Kelowna some easy travel games (< 1 hour).

If you set the price high enough for a player, teams won’t pay it. How many teams in the CHL do you think are going to shell out 50k? Don’t believe me. Whatever. I also said wait for the summer. Its super naive to think some players are staying because the USHL is just so gosh darn good and they love it so much.
Ya that’s for off season, most teams aren’t spending 50k atm

The Junior Hockey pyramid in both USA and Canada is much larger than people seem aware.

All for 2024-25 to date

NAHL Weighted Average Age 19.667
BCHL Weighted Average Age 19.261
AJHL Weighted Average Age 19.193
QMJHL Weighted Average Age 18.848
USHL Weighted Average Age 18.824
OHL Weighted Average Age 18.733
WHL Weighted Average Age 18.687

and just comparison

NCAA Weighted Average Age 22.433

NAHL = no limits on number of 20 year olds that can play on a team
USHL and the 3 CHL leagues = Max of 20 year olds per game
NCDC = Max of 8 20 year old skaters per game

Also the EHL is the current leader in Division 3 NCAA commitments for what it's worth. That could shift to NAHL based on recent decision. EHLP often feeds into EHL.

The USPHL (which broke off from USA Hockey) is a league that moves players up quite a bit, often to NCDC, NAHL and Canadian Junior A. The USPHL-Premier is the top one of these two, and the USPHL-Elite often feeds into Premier.

In addition to the AJHL which is Canada's Best Junior A Hockey (with BCHL being an independent), there's the NOJHL, MJHL, SJHL, CCHL which are sending players to American and Canadian Universities presently.

The GOJHL is the one that functions most like a Minor League for the OHL. They were considering going independent, but may not with the recent decision as you may see more affiliations across all the Canadian Junior A Leagues.

NA3HL is the official third tier of the USA Hockey Pyramid but generally not as good as the independent ones mentioned above. A few NCAA D3 commits but mostly ACHA players from here, this one may not be around too much longer.
What does “weighted” mean? What was used for weights?

Elliotte Friedman, with the decision of CHL players being eligible to play Division I NCAA hockey, the OHL is looking to pursue an "aggressive" expansion that could happen as early as next year.

"The Ontario Hockey League had a board meeting on Wednesday, and at that time, a mandate was given to pursue aggressive expansion," Friedman said. "A lot of people are wondering if that means USHL teams, I think that's all going to get figured out over the next few months. I'm told it's possible it could happen as early as next season, and I thought we were talking about 2 teams, but I had a few people tell me it could be more than 2."

Should be worth remembering that the USHL's Muskegon Lumberjacks and Youngstown Phantoms approached the

OHL about joining the league before the season

Maybe they should actually be developing talent better instead of having one league and one team in that league doing most of the heavy lifting if they don't want the Canadians taking their spots.
I still think UNH will stink - need new coach

What does this even mean? What is this one league and team you reference?

No one is upset either at Canadians taking spots. They already do. And NCAA is a separate entity that USA Hockey has no control over.

I don’t know why there would be more than one major junior league in the USA. We already see what the NAHL is. There isn’t the interest in junior hockey in the USA to be putting teams in California or Texas or Florida.

And I think what you mention is a misconception about development in the USA. There are a lot more American players who play at roughly the top 25 college programs that didn’t play at the NTDP than did. And while it’s probably closer to 50/50 for overall NHL’ers because the NTDP players simply have a better chance to end up NHL’ers because they are better at hockey, there’s a lot more to hockey development for 16-18 year old hockey players in the USA than the NTDP. That includes some of the best players in the NHL.

USA hockey can and likely will have that same thought process as you've laid out.

At best they've already reached their peak and they will stagnate in terms of developing quality players from the pool they have. At worst, they are going to go back to being an after thought compared to the CHL.

So you think the country that has grown their hockey program the most the last 15 years doesn’t have growth potential? Hard to believe.

These were your words: “I don’t know why there would be more than one major junior league in the USA. We already see what the NAHL is. There isn’t the interest in junior hockey in the USA to be putting teams in California or Texas or Florida.”

You’re the one who thinks they don’t have growth potential.

I believe they do but won’t be proactive enough to capitalize on it.
