"Well done"

Keep your head up kid!

Meh, not saying that Krefeld played nicely, I haven't seen any of the games lately, but the slash doesn't look that much out of the ordinary. It's a slash, and that alone already makes it a penalty, but getting injured from a slash often has little to do with the viciousness of the slash and more to do with bad luck. A tiny tap can lead to a bad injury while a viscious slash can lead to absolutely nothing. This particular slash doesn't look like it was more than a common play players do all the time, trying to slash the stick, illegal, but not an attempt to injure. The injury does make it 5 + game though.

I don't think the last hit was against the head either, looks more like it hits the outstretched right arm which gets pushed back against the body and partially hits the player's own head. A concussion would probably come from the head hitting the ice afterwards. He definately didn't see him coming though and wasn't in a good position to be hit, which could be used to hand out a penalty for the hit.

DEL-teams definately aren't looking good so far. Doesn't help that some of them starting training quite a bit later than teams from other leagues, and there are some injury troubles as well, but the overall performance is very bleak. It's not surprising that they can't keep up on average with teams from better leagues, but right now they do look lost at times. They had shown much better performances in the last few years, even if it wasn't called the CHL back then.

The reason many reacted was because there were several cheap blows dealt by the Krefeldt players (Perrault especially), those two were just the ones resulting in injury.

And no I'm pretty sure the last hit was to the head.

I didn't say that this wasn't the case, just that those two particular scenes aren't quite like they were described. The slash is pretty common, and the hit didn't look like it was against the head. Neither says anything about how Krefeld behaved throughout the game, nor does it suggest that you can't punish players for it.

That picture doesn't say anything at all though.
a) it's not taken at the time of impact
b) the angle doesn't allow any judgement when it comes to the exact point of contact

Again, from looking at the video, Krefeld's player hits the arm, which then gets pushed against the shoulder or throat area, and a possible contact with the head afterwards. That is not a clear cut check to the head. You can clearly see the arm bounce back from contact.
The player couldn't see it coming and he was in a vulnerable position, but that doesn't make it a check against the head. What makes it look worse is the fact that the player was losing his balance, falling slightly backwards even prior to the hit. That is what could have caused an impact with the head, as the head moved downwards, while the arm and the Krefeld player stayed at one level.

Any injury would likely come from hitting the head on the ice anyway.

Yes, players slashing another player over the arms happens, and it happened here. Not really sure what we're discussing there...
Your take on the hit is not how the CHL Sports Board saw it:
https://www.sportlounge.com/Publishing/Suspension?id=29#
Explanation
According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence, the player Joel Perrault (#26) of Krefeld Pinguine, time 52:32, made contact with an opposing player deemed as Checking to the Head and Neck Area - IIHF Rule 124. A 5-minute Match Penalty was assessed by the On-Ice Officials.

From the perspective of the CHL Sports Board, it is clear that Joel Perrault (#26) of Krefeld Pinguine made contact with the opposing player deemed as Checking to the Head and Neck Area. The CHL Sports Board deemed this check as unnecessary and avoidable contact, elevating the action to supplementary discipline. The opposing player is in a defenceless position (on one knee) due to the action of a Krefeld Pinguine player. Joel Perrault (#26) took advantage of an opposing player in a vulnerable position who was unsuspecting of contact. In addition, Joel Perrault (#26) was unimpeded to make the check, had no regard for the puck and used excessive force to deliver contact to the head/neck area of the opposing player. The opposing player did receive an apparent injury to the head and neck area and was unable to return to the game.

From the perspective of the CHL Sports Board, Joel Perrault (#26) of Krefeld Pinguine is suspended for 2 CHL games, effective immediately.

Key Points:
1- Made contact to head/neck area of opposing player
2- Unimpeded in ability to avoid head/neck contact
3- No regard for the puck
4- Not a repeat offender

Suspended games:
24.09.2014 Krefeld Pinguine - Sønderjyske Vojens
07.10.2014 Sønderjyske Vojens - Krefeld Pinguine

I actually like these suspension videos, very easy to follow. Wish SHL did the same.
