Everyone is scared of Jones because of all the DMen on great second RFA contracts in a flat cap. So Jones, who isn’t a top DMan looks really bad in comparison. Makar and Q. Hughes expire in 2027 and are eligible to sign a UFA contract extension beginning a July 1, 2026. Even Bouchard coming off his bridge with only a little bit of rfa time this summer could be the first big domino to start seeing the price of DMen go up in a big way. As long as Jones doesn’t age too bad his contract especially with some retention won’t be too bad.

The Avalanche want Seth Jones and the Hawks want Rantanen. I don't see the problem
Forget whether Jones is as valuable as Rantanen alone. He isn't. But has a team contending for a cup ever traded away a player like Rantanen around the deadline?

ill believe that when i see it.

Avs management are idiots. They will expect Rantanen to stick to the internal "MacKinnon cap" yet be too stubborn to trade him thinking they actually have a shot a winning this year (spoiler alert: they don't). We've seen all this from them before.

Meanwhile, Rantanen has a history of holding out to maximize his contract and he's only 5 months away from 30+ teams clamoring over each other to give him as much money as possible.

It's the most likely outcome at this point. I can't fault the Avs for not wanting to give a winger 14 million, but they should have traded him over a year ago.

Rantanen stay in COL or joins the Finnish national team in a low tax state (Panthers or Stars) in a Othani type deal

My guess is Mittelstad is a dud and they want to cut ties already.

I expects us to be in the Rantanen sweepstakes but kinda funny seeing him in any mock trades its certainly not gonna be now.

Colorado can give the 8th year though, for a 29 year old especially, that's pretty important.

Basically, they "should" get whatever AAV savings coming out of a 7 year deal + whatever a 1 year deal Rantanen thinks he'd get when he's 36 years old. Figure that's, idk, $4 million

So say, he's confident he could get 7 years at $14 million on the open market.

$14 million x 7 = $98 million, add another $4 million = $102 million

That means, Rantnaen should be willing to sign a $102 million total contract for 8 years, which comes out to $12.75 million AAV, that only Colorado can offer.

Basically with the extra year, for a player at that age, Colorado can effectively shave $1.25 million AAV off the open market price.

Wait, some people think a cup contender will trade their 6'4" 100point+ winger for anything on the Blackhawks ?
