Chiefs are absolutely getting ass raped by the cap.

Thuney only has a year left on his deal and are hoping to sign Trey Smith long term.

This is a pure cap dump move for them as they also need to search the couch cushions to bring back Bolton and Reid.
They've haven't taken big cap charges on Mahomes. He's been more than willing to work with the team. Looking at their roster, they are not taking large cap charges on their WR, DB, LB groups. But, guys are coming off rookie deals and need to get paid.

Guess, they opted to go for the guy who has more years in Smith than the better player in Thuney.

The Chiefs had a legendary 2021 draft and the bill is now due.

Yep, Bolton, Creed, and Smith plus Gray (TE). Creed got signed, the rest need new deals as they are free agents.
2022 class, also eligible after 3 years. McDuffie, Karlaftis, headline that draft class. Can push it down another season, but may want to get on that early.

Paying the guys coming off rookie deals means that the guys who are currently making big money need to be moved off. Thus, Thuney trade.

I'm surprised they wouldn't just restructure him and kick the can down the road since their window is closing fast.

They can't really do that, because they have issues next off season too
They made it to 3 straight SB with him. If it is now time to pay the piper, so be it.

They have issues next season as that is when they can move off Taylor OT, when his dead cap totals just $7 million. He'd be a $34 mill dead cap this off-season.

But, then their 2022 draft class will be free agents. And likely both of their 1sts, McDuffie/Karlaftis will want new deals this off-season as well to have that locked up before year 4.

I don't think their window is closing fast if at all. Not with how good they are at drafting and Mahomes probably playing at a very high level for another 7-10 years.

They draft well, particularly on Defence.
On the OL in particular:

Suamataia - Rd 2 2024 OT. Not good. That's why Thuney got moved from LG to LT
Morris - Rd 3 2023 OL. Probably looking for an upgrade over him.
Humphrey - Rd 2 2021 C. Best C in the NFL now
Smith - Rd 6 2021 OG - Fell due to medical situation. Likely a day 2 pick. Good starter.

Last couple of guys they were banking on having stepped up the way they hoped. Can 1 of them play OG next season?
Not as strong a draft for OL this year.

This is one of the weirdest situations in the league from a generally competent team. He was an athletic freak but a complete project who clearly wasn't ready. They threw him right into the fire, then might have completely given up on him when it didn't work.

It already feels like it's headed for a hell of a value signing for his next team if they have the right OL coach and mindset. I'll be hoping that's Philadelphia.
