To :stars
D Seth Jones with $2.5M retention ($7M x 5 becomes his remaining contract after this year)

To :hawks
D Matt Dumba ($3.75M signed thru next season)
RW Emil Hemmings
Stars 2025 1st round pick

Yeah Hawks eat good chunk for next 5 years and take awful Dumba back to get a third 2025 1st round pick (Hawks have own + Leafs) which is likely to be late and a guy selected late in this previous draft who is having a poor year in OHL right now but would add as a prospect to Hawks system non the less at position of weakness (Wing)

Stars would need to LTIR Seguin here to fit Jones but he would give them big RD add to top 4 and well Dumba is pretty worthless at this point so that is no loss for them. They got Stranges and a few others so Hemmings loss from system does not hurt them too much + he is years away as prospect. Stars 1st will be well late this year

I tend to think the Stars aren't going to trade two first round picks' worth of value for anyone.

No mention here of the player's point of view, he of the ironclad NMC? Seems relevant since Jones has, you know, a veto.

Jones hasn't been worth two 1sts for a few years, even with these cap considerations.

Too much risk for Dallas. If Jones doesn't regain his legit top pair ability, this would cost us dearly long-term.

Erik Karlsson could serve as a model.

He was retained by 1.5 for 4 years.

If Chicago wants to do something different I think it’s likely they’d have to hold back some pay or not expect a tremendous return. IMO Seth jones has value but it’s so specific to a situation like Dallas, so you probably wouldn’t see a line of buyers helping drive up the price.

Dallas would be hard pressed to fit $3.25m in extra cap next year (7m Jones - 3.75m Dumba) with Otter’s extension kicking in and Benn / Bourque / Johnston / Duchene’s contracts coming up, and then again the following year with Robertson, Stankoven, and Harley coming up. If Dallas joins in on the “deferred contract” craze or Benn and Duchene take below market value, it might work. I certainly dont want to lose Harley in 1.5 years at the expense of having Jones for 4 more years

But value wise, it seems fair but last year’s 1st + another first (albeit late round picks) might be a little steep for Nill who doesnt like to trade picks

Hemming's OHL production is pretty pedestrian, I'd say he's a faller late 1st on draft day to now. I'd be OK with it from Chicago's perspective, although Brodie and Dumba both on the roster next year would drive Chicago fans mad.

No thanks on Jones. I'd take my chances with our current Dcore than taking on Jones.
this is crazy talk - the stars played 5 D all last playoffs and they were worn out by the Oilers series

BSmith/Lundkvist/Dumba will be giving us all nightmares if they are on the playoff roster.

You're right, it is crazy talk, but that's how much I don't want Jones and his contract. Even if it's retained. I simply think he's overrated, and imo he always has been.

There are other options out there that will make us equally as good, if not better, and also not handcuff us in the future.

Maybe, but Lyubushkin/Lundkqvist/Dumba is the sorriest looking slate of Righthanded Defensemen to roll into the Playoffs as a pseudo-contender I can imagine. That's like a 5/6/GTFOH Off My Roster. If the cap is too much to stomach, then best of luck to them in whatever move to at the TDL they look to make.

Yeah it ain't pretty. It's doing the job right now, but come playoff time it won't. That being said, I have zero doubt Nill will be adding 1 or 2 pieces on the backend.

Again, the cap is not the issue here. I am just not very high on Jones, and I never have been.

The guy plays over 24 minutes a night on average and is not a liability. In what world is that not "legitimate top pair ability."

Sure Hemming was drafted in the first but is a farcry from being some top tier prospect.

Dallas strongly needs to consider adding a top 4 defenseman and if the cost gap between someone like Jones retained and Rasmus Andersson not retained (if even made available) is Hemming vs Bourque and additional assets then you probably go with Jones. That's not even factoring in them taking on Dumba.

Also saying this is an overpayment after what Vegas paid for Hertl retained is just flat out wrong.
