To Chicago:
:hawks
-Josh Manson
-Miles Wood
-2026 COL 1st round pick
-2027 COL 2nd round pick

To Colorado:
:avs
-Seth Jones
-Ryan Donato

Colorado upgrades Manson to Jones, and Wood to Donato, strengthening their roster.

This leaves Colorado left with $261,500 in cap space, so it is compliant.

I’m not sure those are upgrades for the Avs. Maybe Donato. But Manson is very good and Seth Jones seems to periodically forget how to play. Plus there’s no retention in your proposal and paying 9.5 for him is not something the Avs should be doing.
Cap goes up 7M in the offseason

I don't think it works because part of the motivation for getting Jones is to push Manson to the 3rd pair. Taking on Jones (esp. his full contract) while losing Manson is not enough of an upgrade while not gaining depth. Avs need depth.

Therefore retention is needed. I'm not sure of the other moving parts but Wood would be involved, yes. If Manson is included maybe so is Murphy retained @50%. Although I think Manson is a better option in the playoffs.

So ya, not a bad starting point but I don't see Jones getting moved without some sort of retention. He's got a NMC and only 2 realistic destinations

Take out the Avs first and add some retention ( 2m) on Jones and that's a more competitive proposal. No contending team is taking Jones at 9.5. Also Manson is good 5th D man nothing more than that. I wouldn't call him really good

Taking out 1st makes it pointless for Hawks

Also Wood and his bad back is going to be problem for Avs going forward. No reason for Hawks to take on that for nothing in return

That's fine but Manson has value as a big RHD that plays top 4 minutes. Jones holds all the cards and likely would only accept a trade to a handful of teams. This hurts his value in trade scenarios. I still think the Avs or Dallas make the most sense for Seth, but both would require retention

The Avs best expendable trade assets are Mittlestadt, Ritchie, 20261st and 2 2025 2nds. They need to upgrade a 2C and get a guy like Jones,

I'd move Mittlestadt + Wood + 2nd for Jones ~7M + a roster F from Chicago to even out the cap (i.e. Kurashev/Donato), or from another source.

But that's only if the Avs had a 2C target lined up that they could get for Ritchie + 1st + 2nd with their remaining cap space. Problem is, the market is pretty bare for this.

Ideally, there would be enough cap space and trade assets to upgrade on a bottom pair LHD too, but that's not a necessity. Ultimately it would leave the Avs looking something like this:

Lehkonen - Mack - Necas
Drouin - 2C (Nelson?) - Nichuskin
Colton - Drury - LOC/Donato/Kurashev/other F
Kiviranta - Kelly - LOC/Donato/Kurashev/other F
Parissinen, Landeskog (LTIR playoff possibility)

Toews - Makar
Girard - Jones
X/Kylington - Manson
Malinski

If I'm Hawks GM, I'm hanging up right here.
I have no problem with the pick, or the trade even, other than the fact that Avs need a lower cap hit on Jones. It is just too restrictive to allow for other moves.

If they can find a way to work it out, I’d have no problem with the Avs adding extra pieces to get it done.

A 1st, 2nd, Manson and Wood would be plenty to pick up Andersson from the Flames who is half the cost in cap hit, but really the Avs need a 2C more than a Manson upgrade right now.

It’s close as to which is more important imo. Manson hasn’t had a great season and even at that, if he goes down in the playoffs, we have the worst RD trio playing. If mitts goes down, it’s a marginal downgrade, if that with the way he’s played this year. Also taking into account that offense is not our problem but we bleed high danger chances and unforced errors, it becomes clear that 2 RD is a very real issue.

no thanks to Jones, let Dallas have him

Isn’t Anderson a free agent this offseason? If not I’m game although I’d like to keep Manson until the offseason
