Avs would have interest in Seth Jones, but only if the number was around 7.5M or less. There would also be a few other teams interested in that, so I understand that there would be a sweetener.

However, as others have pointed out, Seth Jones at his full contract is a negative asset for most teams (even though I'm a fan of the player). So I think it's either you retain on him at some point or you just accept that you're keeping him. It's not like his value is going up with age either.

Otherwise the Avs would probably just go after a guy like Murphy and run him and Manson on the 2nd/3rd pair

6 years of retention?

Colorado doesn't have the assets
Jones without retention? Chicago isn't putting up the assets.

Jones without retention doesn't make sense for a team trying to contend. A team who's rebuilding and doesn't mind the dead cap to gain a few first rounders makes more sense.

To Chicago:
:hawks
-Casey Mittelstadt
-Josh Manson
-Ivan Ivan
-Colorado 2026 1st round pick

To Colorado:
:avs
-Seth Jones
-Jason Dickinson (@50% retention)
-Ryan Donato
How is this missing the super obvious need for Chicago to retain 50% on Seth Jones (to balance value and make Jones interesting to Colorado). Avs add nothing for this. The OP is outrageously overvaluing Seth Jones.

That's absolutely horrendous wtf. Seth Jones has no value at $9.5M.

Edit: Ok reading some of the replies things appear to have at least gotten somewhat closer...

IMO:

- Remove Dickinson
- Move his $2.125M retained over to Jones, so Jones would come to Colorado at $7.375M.
- Replace Manson with Wood

Mittelstadt + Ivan + 2026 1st + Wood for Jones(@7.375M) + Donato

I'd be tempted to do that one but I probably wouldn't pull the trigger unless the Avs had a separate deal lined up for a better 2C then what Donato would be for us. I like Donato quite a bit but more as a utility middle 6 guy then a pure 2C.

Maybe Chicago fans feel that deal isn't any good at that point but IMO Jones has to be retained down to $7.5M before he starts to enter positive value territory and without that retention I dont think the Avs would have any interest in him.

You’d think Jones is AHL quality D with this complete NPC ass take here

Taking Woods as part of a package for Jones essentially works the same as retention.

For those saying Jones has no value that is just a lazy take and as others have mentioned with significant increases to the cap over the next few years his contract will not be as difficult to work into a roster. He would be a solid 2/3 for most teams.

People always seem to forget Seth Jones is a good defenseman.
It's not going to be nothing, but if/when Jones is traded I don't think it'll be a huge return. Mainly for these 2 reasons:

1. Jones has a NMC
2. Teams that are interested/Jones would waive for would require retention

That basically puts the onus on Chicago needing to retain to make a deal work, otherwise you're just left with him. So it's going to be something like Cap dump roster player + Pick + B prospect(s), something in that range. I don't see an A asset being included.

There's been a few Avs proposals like

Ivan Ivan
Olausson
Wood
2026 1st

I think the Avs would try to get Kurashev involved too if the cap could work, or ship out Colton in another deal and add Dickinson if they saw it as an improvemnt
