He looks good man. Minnesota fans are just upset about a trade

Honestly no. I would say 90% of Minnesota Wild fans are thrilled with Donato right now. Fans are buzzing with excitement after seeing him these first few games. Although we’re not naïve, it is just a few games. But so far so good.

Remember when he stepped in here after his college season?

Player Discussion - Ryan Donato

a lot of "the points are nice but" in their thread on him. Main themes are he needs to get stronger, improve his skating, raise his compete level and get into/win puck battles

I’d much rather prefer when healthy:

Marchand-bergy-heinen
Debrusk-krejci-pasta
Johansson-coyle-cehlarik
Wagner-kuraly-acciari

That top line has gone quiet 5v5 the last few games. I don't think Heinen lasts there the rest of the year, and obviously it's only one game, but JD-Krech-Mojo looked damn good last night. I expect the following when Pasta is back

63-37-88
74-46-90
43-13-??
55/20/52/14

Some combination of those 4 guys on the 4th line... and the key question is, are we playing Backes here on out? Or do we put Cehlarik/Kuhlman in there for more offense/skill. We shall see. Lots of options... but I expect that to be what they look to do. I think Heinz will be good with Coyle.

I don’t think that line looks quiet at 5 on 5 because of Heinen, they were quiet for stretches with Pastrnak too. Looks like Bergeron might not be 100%. But I still wouldn’t mind putting Pastrnak back without Bergeron.

In the past 5 games the Marchand-bergy-heinen line have been on the ice for 3 5v5 goals. Wouldn’t count that as being quiet.

Also heinen has 9 points in his last 10 games.

Told my buddy at work who is from MN and a Wild fan that I guaranteed Donato would score his first game. Because I'd expect nothing less with people we trade.

Sure enough

Ehhh, I dunno. I watch every game as I'm sure you do, and they definitely haven't done much the last few. Heinen has still been getting his points though. Again, this is not me saying Heinen isn't cutting it, just saying I wouldn't be shocked if Pasta goes back up there, especially with MoJo looking good on the 2nd line. All depends what happens over the next 2 weeks when Pasta is ready to come back.

Well while the Pastrnak injury sucks, he probably is going to be out for a bit longer, so we'll get to really see if Johansson is a good fit on that 2nd line. He played well last game there, so you'd think it'll work but you never know. It'll give them time to figure out if MoJo is a longterm fit there or is better suited for the 3rd line when Pastrnak returns (and this also works with Heinen).

Coyle is a guy who you can more or less play C on his own, without any skilled guys, just plumbers. I think the more work you load on him, the better. He has a tendency to defer, and disappear, when he plays wing, or with more talented teammates. I think he might be in such awe of Bergeron and Marchand that he wouldn't play selfish enough, which is when he is best.
Part of the problem with him in MN was that he kept getting moved from RW to C and back, and was playing on anywhere from the 1st line to the 3rd. Sometimes PP, sometimes not. I wonder if he would flourish if he had a clear role. Perhaps if he lead a checking line at C, then it would free up Bergeron and Krecji for more offensive duties. In a pinch, if either of those two are getting bullied, then he could always play RW for a while on their lines. He's not a fighter, but he's a big, strong guy who will rattle some cages.

Donato is scoring , and scoring at clutch times, but at this point I think it's fool's gold. He has a fraction of Coyle's physical gifts...much weaker, slower, and limited in that he can only play wing. He needs a good off season in the weight room. Wish we had gotten Frederic instead...nothing against Donato, but MN doesn't need LW's, and are desperate for young C's.

Once Donato figures it out mentally, (Offensive and defensive decisions are out of whack at times), and physically he'll be a 20+ goal scorer with the potential for 50 points.

He supposedly worked out all last summer in preparation for this year. Obviously he messed up somewhere because he wasn't noticeably stronger at all.

He truly does flash elite hands and creativity. He also uses a long stick for his size, I'm not sure if that's the easiest thing for him since he has to work on his all around game at the moment. Maybe a smaller stick keeps everything more compact and he can get stronger on the puck? I'm no expert.

So far, he's been money offensively, and not a disaster defensively. Just seems to be pretty weak in board battles.
You can be weak, or slow. Just don't be weak, and slow.

really? Haven`t noticed him struggling or being weak in that area? Not going to say he`s a beast along the wall but haven`t noticed it being an issue. For me, and I only got to see the game he played vs the Sharks, there were 2 separate occasions where he head manned the puck, once to Nordy, the other to Backes, the latter took a soft wrister that missed the net where it would have been a better decision to perhaps take the puck along the wall and make a play or even a soft chip into the corner and the Nordy rush ended when he had 0 move ready to execute once he got to the blue line.

Ideally Coyle would be supplied with two players who have some offensive skill, right now I`d take 1 but until Pasta returns or one of Backes or Nordy are scratched, that 3rd line will only be marginally better and that may even be pushing it. If anything we know this, that line is very responsible defensively so at least Butch can put them out in a defensive stance if needed but I`m anxious to see what Coyle and the 3rd line can do with 2 bodies on there who have some touch

I was talking about Donato. Coyle is a handful along the wall. Donato gets his lunch money taken from him.

You never know what Coyle is going to do when he is put with talented players. On paper it should work, and sometimes it does on the ice, and he looks like a borderline 1st liner. Other times, you can't find him. Better to stick him in the position where he has to drive a line, and at C.
