"You too, could draft your own Dustin Wolf!" - Conroy, probably.

For the last 10 years I swear the Flames' draft picks from the third round onwards have contributed more than the average, but don't quote me on that.
2015 to 2019, from the second round onwards:
Rasmus Andersson (2nd)
Oliver Kylington (2nd)
Dillon Dube (2nd, also a terrible person)
Adam Fox (3rd)
Martin Pospisil (4th)
Dustin Wolf (7th)

A pretty impressive list of NHLers. Then you have guys from 2020 forward who look like good bets to be NHLers in Kerins (6th), Kuznetsov (2nd) , and Stromgren (2nd). Now we have the 2023-24 classes, with some high potential names in Morin (2nd), Suniev (3rd), Basha (2nd, Battaglia (2nd), and Mews (3rd), and the worse of the Miss brothers (5th). Obviously A LOT of guys in this paragraph won’t make it, but Calgary is a great team at finding value after the 1st round. Under Treliving we traded most our picks, now under Conroy we have extra and we are seeing the value our scouting staff can create.

It’s basically a change of scenery trade for all involved. It’s also the Flyers finally giving up on two former 1st Rd picks. Which is never good, but they’ve been nothing but inconsistent, and they’re 25 now.

On the surface though, the Flames probably will win the trade, because there’s a better chance Farabee or Frost (or both) take this new opportunity away from Torts, and run with it. Pelletier likely never is more than what Farabee already is. That’s his ceiling. He’ll never be more than a 45-50 point winger, at best. Frost is the one who’s going to get the best matchup chances immediately btw.

It shouldn’t take long to see what the Flames should expect from these two. They’re not developing anymore. It really is all about a fresh start and new opportunity. However better Frost or Farabee is in Calgary, was likely never going to happen in Philly. Much like the Sam Bennett of today, was never going to happen in Calgary. Sometimes it’s just the player’s perception of how a coach or organization sees him too.

One thing about this deal that’s a little strange? I’m not sure what Briere is thinking by bringing Kuzmenko anywhere near Michkov. He’s much more likely to gain his bad habits than feel more comfortable with another Russian to have around. There were other Russians to acquire if that was the goal.

Farabee and Frost are complimentary players, but still good pieces. What I don’t understand is this… Sure they are both 25 and they were not world beaters but they were also way better than the return they got. Surround them with better and more talented forwards and they would also look way better. Flyers also play a style that may not be the best for skill players. I could see them loosen up and be way better surrounded by the right players and playing a style that fits them better.

This feels like Philly will be taking swings in free agency this offseason because the trade itself seems questionnable at this stage.

Noah Cates, Ryan Poehling are about to get lifetime contract extensions.

I fully expect that Frost will become a solid 2C somewhere, he's very creative, he's just inconsistent, but I think he can put up 50-60 points in the right situation. Farabee is looking horrible after his surgery, not sure what happened, but he's just a low IQ run of the mill winger, that doesn't PK or do anything other than score, and he hasn't been scoring. All in all a shit trade for the Flyers, but they do rid themselves of Farabee's contract, that's about the only positive.

They are gonna take swings in UFA.
Again, players like Frost and Farabee can be found for free every July 1.
Was somebody gonna give up a 1st for one of them? No. Flyers got a 2nd round pick for one player, and got a change of scenery hockey swap with Kuzmenko for the other. Also get out from Farabee's contract (while it was not some albatross, if he doesn't have a place in the organization it is best to move on from it so then you can gain flexibility elsewhere). You sign Farabee back then thinking it is gonna be a steal of a contract, but he never really progressed like they thought and it ends up not being some steal, so oops.

If Frost or Farabee does better in Calgary, good for them. They were never gonna do that in Philly.

He’s gonna get every opportunity starting immediately with Zary on the shelf. Calgary’s been looking for a Top 6 C and Frost is who they’ve chosen. At least to give that opportunity to right now.

Expect him to make an impact immediately too. It’s the consistency he’s gonna have to bring if this opportunity is going to last. Being away from Torts (constantly feeling like he’s looking over their shoulders) is going to be a good thing for both players. Hopefully what they learned from him sticks though.

Yeah, I hope the best for Frost, really happy for the guy, seems lika nice dude.

For a new GM Conroy somehow managed to turn:

Elias Lindholm, Jakob Pelletier, 2nd round pick and a 7th round pick

Into

Morgan Frost, Joel Farabee, Matvei Gridin, Luke Misa, Hunter Brzustewicz, Eric Jamieson and Joni Jurmo.

With work like that I suspect Conroy will be GM for a long time.

I don't think they really care about Kuzmenko. They'd just rather have an expiring $5M deal instead of one with three more years on it.
If they use the $ they save on Farabee next year to pay Torts NOT to coach, it will be the best outcome of this trade. One year left at $4M, kick him upstairs to be the Sr Advisor to the Pack of Arseholes running the Flyers…

Frost is going to be great if they put a scorer and a grinder with him. He was consistent in Jr, the best Greyhound every night. He’s just been constantly jerked around by the coach for no real good reason except he has great skills and vision.

I think it makes sense. Another season like he's having and you're likely paying to get rid of him instead of just selling low. Might as well get value for him while you can.

On the flip side, if he does improve, it's not like he's a hard player to replace with $5M in UFA.
As a UFA, for a 20 goal and 50 point player, at $5 million you're going to be paying for several post prime seasons with a UFA. What makes Farabee appealing is his age, he's only 24.

Good use of cap space on some calculated bet for CGY. Farabee/Frost are currently middle 6 tweeners, not really top 6 on a good team, stylistically Frost is a weird 3C on a good team. Farabee is solid and has top 6 pedigree, but it’s not really potential at this point, he just needs to get his game back.

Outside of teams with significant cap space I can’t see there being too much of a market for Farabee, overpaid for where his game is at, going back about a year. If he’s a 35-45 point winger then there’s a glut of those around the league. Say there’s a 50/50 chance he’s over/underpaid by about $2M depending on he responds. Similar with Frost, not many teams would see him to a solution to current or future problems and he’s due a raise but there’s some NHL skill there obviously. PHI obviously see this as ~$9M they don’t have to pay guys that weren’t long term fits, different calculus for CGY considering they are barely to the cap floor.
