An eternity... It will feel like if he doesn't improve. 4 years after this one at 5.75m

Another 4 years after this one. I'd be very tempted if I were Ottawa - you just have to figure out if you can take on that salary for another 4 years.

Its fair because Ott takes back Neal imo. Pretty clever trade. Ott generally doesn't like taking back cap but they will need to reach the floor some how and they get a guy who can play for them.

We get a chance to negotiate with Stone before the trade?
If not, not trading out 1st, top prospect and a decent NHLer with upside for a rental. I think Stone's worth it, but not if we can't keep him past this season.

If we take out Neal to remove one of those pieces, I'd be for it.

Yikes, could calgary retain 1.75 million?

Would pull the trigger on it, its not like ottawa would have cap issues in the next 4 years anyways

I think Ottawa will take on some bad contracts, but only for players with 1-2 years left on their deal. I dont see them taking on a contract like Neal's.

What if Dube and Stone were taken out? Then trade Frolik/Stone or both so we have cap space to resign everyone. Not sure if Mark wanting to play with Michael matters for Mark to resign.

Is this what you meant?
To Calgary:

Patrick Sieloff

To Ottawa:

2019 1st
2020 2nd
Oliver Kylington
James Neal

Ottawa would be all over that but Melnyk likely nixes it.

Huh? If you take out Dube and Stone then the Flames are trading all that for Sieloff? lol

I don’t think Calgary can take Stone without Neal going back. Neal might actually do well in Ottawa, he sure isn’t a bad player. He just hasn’t hit his stride in Calgary, yet.

I think hes got a great shot at hitting it for playoffs though. Hes been seemingly great lately, though damn unlucky. I'm not that worried about his contract, but I would definitely do this trade

Take out Mark Stone from the trade, and that would be close to a fair proposal for a team taking on 4 more years of nearly 6 million of dead cap.

Look at the history of cap dump trades. Teams have paid significant amounts to dump contracts with much less money and term than the Neal contract. It's not something that just gets tacked on as a minor cap dump to facilitate a bigger trade.

There's probably something that the Flames and Senators could make work around Ryan for Neal if it lowered the money Ottawa owes over the term of the contracts, but I'd imagine the Flames would have to give the Senators an asset since Ryan is currently playing like a top 6 forward, and Neal is playing like someone who is absolutely done.

Teams don't take on 23 million of dead cap hoping that a player just needs to hit his stride. It's incredibly unrealistic to expect Ottawa to be interested in that Neal contract.

With that said, the Flames can take Stone as a rental because they only have to take the prorated remainder of his contract. Sens may have to retain salary or take back a smaller expiring cap dump (or roster player with salary), but they wouldn't have to take back equal money. As of today, Stone's cap hit is about 2 million for any team acquiring him.

Not all teams are cheap like the Sens. Enjoy your basement....We are ok with spending money to get better. Some time it works, some time not....

Also, Neal is a disappointment but definitely not done. Ryan or Neal same thing.....

That's not really productive.

You can look at the history of cap dump oriented trades and clearly see no contract as bad as Neals has ever been dumped, and contracts that were nowhere near as bad have cost significant amounts to be moved. It's perfectly reasonable to point out how absurd Neal's inclusion in the proposal is.
