Flames take a flyer on a talented defensemen

Devils take the picks in attempt to use them to find help elsewhere

Seems like a win win. I think it was clear to NJ early on that nemec value wasn’t going to be the main piece involved in acquiring a decent forward so they opted for the quantity

I hope he does well but
We likely plan on treating him as we have Bahl and Rango. No need to worry :).

I saw a tweet that hinted Devils originally wanted to target Flames players in this trade instead of picks. I'm baffled and curious who Devils management was interested in before picks were swapped into this final trade. No clue if they were veterans or prospects.
Looking like they were trying to get players from other teams for Nemec, but wasn't moving the needle. Now gambling on using these picks for the players instead. Maybe they see more flexibility with picks than Nemec.

I think this trade is a win-win. Devils had a logjam at RHD , couldn’t afford to pay Nemec’s supposed salary he is going to want , and got assets they can bundle up to hopefully get a top 6 winger or C . Flames got a young former #2 overall pick with potential for late round 1sts. I’d say both teams got what they wanted

People worried about 15 and 16 year olds will never not be funny for me. What are people expecting, Calgary to be relevant in 2035? We’ve made 2 first round picks in the past 2 drafts, will make another 2 Friday, we dont need more on the backend of the draft.

These are the moves you have to make, this was a second overall a few years back, 22 and from Conroy’s interview, the pro scouting staff loved his back half of 25/26. He’ll be given PP responsibility, he’s going to play massive minutes with Bahl.

Even in Nemec’s interview with local radio he pointed at Bahl as a guy who went from not getting a lot of time to being a minute muncher and what it did for him as a player.
Just a side note, just think of what it can do for Nemec's confidence knowing what NJD thought of Bahl and what Bahl's grown into in Calgary... and now the Flames appear to have the same faith in him... that's is good for the confidence and it's great for motivation

feels like an odd player to target and spend your picks on for Calgary. He could end up being real good in a different situation though. Just not sure what their plan is with offensive opportunity when they have Parehk waiting in the wings
psst you're allowed to have more than 1 good player on a team.

Definitely means Whitecloud is being moved to the Sens.

RD
1) Nemec
2) Parekh
3) Brzustewicz
Parekh also plays LD. Including most of his Jr time and later in the season

so more likely means

Bahl - Nemec
Parekh - Whitecloud
Maattaa - Brzustewicz/Kuznetsov/Wiebe/Hanley/Pachal/#6 OA Pick

Just seems like a dumb trade in general for Calgary. I think it’s bad because they can’t have a plan and actually stick with it. Value wise it’s probably fine though.

The picks will be late though.
I'm sorry, what? In what world is trading for a recently turned 22 year old defenseman that recently was chose2nd overall not a move a rebuilding team makes?

Yeah, I don't really know how anyone really hates this from Calgary's perspective. They have a bajillion picks, need high end talent and are taking a chance on a fairly recent #2 OA with some good traits.

I don't hate the trade from the devils POV (I'm whelmed by it), but gun to my head had to pick one side to hate, I'm probably hating the Devils side of it a little more right now (this could change if we see a pick get moved out for current help)

I was a big advocate for Nemec and I do not think he ever got a fair shake here. I hope he does well and I'll be rooting for him. He certainly has a knack for showing up big in big moments.

That said, I have to acknowledge his deficiencies. His defense was really horrendous. He needs to make major strides there. I think he can and likely will, but it's going to take some time. He struggled big time in transition, and it really hurt our forwards ability to move up the ice with speed.

He's going to be a good player. I don't think I see #1 potential. More like a really good 3 who can jump to 2 when needed. But that's a really valuable player.

Devils already had a log jam at RD and Nemec never took the next step. Foot speed a big issue, but arguably secondary to between the ears. Wish him the best, but I don’t see the potential talked about when he was taken 2OA.

Good return to flip for roster players.

In what world are 2 firsts and a second (35th) valued 25 to 45.

Price is fine, just dont know about the fit, especially if the Flames end up with another RHD at 6th. Flames also now have a stupid amount of NHL defensemen.

Imagine the horror at having three top pairing defensemen that happened to shoot right.

Simon Nemec is a good second-pair defenseman right now, although one with defensive kinks still to iron-out, with a slight shot at being a first-pairing defenseman.

Parekh is a prospect with potential to be a first-pair defenseman, though he has admittedly proven nothing in the NHL so far.

And Landon Dupont likely won't be drafted by the Flames.

So yeah, this idea of Calgary having three top-pairing RHD sometime soon is quite fanciful (though I could possibly see 2).

Aside from that, I actually think this trade helps Calgary in the short term as it will allow them to give more ice to Nemec than he was getting in New Jersey, and potentially give them enough depth and flexibility on defense to possibly trade Zach Whitecloud this season.

New Jersey, on the other hand, get a much-needed high draft pick back that they can then use however they want, either through trade or to get a high-end prospect back in their pipeline.

Seeing Byram go for the 4th overall and the Flames paid 2 late 1sts and 2nd, I take Nemec at this price every day over Byram.

Trade went from good to great in a couple hours, if Nemec can find that potential then this trade goes into awesome territory!
