Cooley benefited from being in the Preds system and went from marginal AHL backup to solid AHL starter who got squeezed out in Milwaukee due to Askarov(ironic, I know) But I have my doubts as to whether he can cut it t the NHL level. He got a cup of coffee with San Jose last season and didn't have much to brag about. I wish him well because he was a good Admiral, but ill be shocked if he sticks at the NHL level
This would be my take on Cooley also, from his Preds days. We certainly never batted an eyelid at him walking away, never considered him an NHL prospect.
So... has he done something to emerge as a late bloomer that improves his stock? Maybe? Or maybe he's just on a hot streak in a lucky situation? We can't know from just reading the stats on the internet. But we will wish him all the best regardless, if he has taken some kind of step in his game, that's great.
:handclap:

Either one is fine. Just grab the pick and throw it on the pile.

What? Why?

Flames should keep him to platoon with Wolf after Vladar expires or whatever so that Calgary's goalie combo can also be claimed as a Cali goalie combo.

Expires? I didn't know he was dying.

And yeah - either one being traded is fine. It's still a rebuild even though the team is winning right now. A plan is a plan.

Vladar contract expires after this season. Both Cooley and Wolf signed 2 year deals this off season IIRC.

A pick to throw on the pile. Somebody will pay that for depth towards the playoffs. Which is how you run a rebuild.

And they'll be left with two goalies who are more than capable of carrying them down the road to the end of the season. And if one of them is injured there's always waivers.
The Flames have 4 firsts, 3 seconds and 3 thirds in the next 2 drafts. You think we are going to get anything more than a 7th for a guy with 6 total NHL games at 27 years old?

Keep the promising players. Right now the Flames are sitting in a playoff spot. I think we are good to stay the course. Trade the expiring contract in Vladar, and see what we have in Cooley. A hot start in the AHL is not going to get a pick that helps with the rebuild.

Well, then trade Vladar.

The way he's playing in the AHL somebody needing insurance for the playoffs might give something up. And whatever it is, it adds to the pile.

Sample size. He played 13 games this season. Take a look at his 14 games in the AHL last season.

He's not the guy to move.

Well then, trade Cooley. There's no sense keeping him on an AHL roster if he's having a good year and potentially on another team's radar.

I think it’s only a matter of time before the Flames move Vladar. They’re likely just waiting for the right offer.

No. You don't trade him. You trade the expiring contract. Thays Vladar. Like. Do you even watch hockey?
I was responding to somebody who argued in favour of keeping Vladar. Try to keep track of the conversation.

I really don't care who they trade but it makes sense that one of them goes.

It only makes sense for one of them to go.
Vladar.
Neither are going to get a return that will do anything to help the retool.
