Him and Wolf are going to make a sick tandem in year two. 408 boys.

Cooley didn't look out of place last year in his late season stint. Let in a few stinkers but seemed to have good composure and that 49-save win against Seattle was fun.

Wouldn't have minded if the Sharks kept the local kid but Romanov looks to be the better youngster. Best of luck in Calgary, Devin!

Goalie honks like this guy. Guys like Woodley are pretty high on him. I actually have some faith in our goaltending department. I think this is a good signing.

getting 1-way next year is interesting, I wonder if that is in part to make someone else putting in a waiver claim less likely this season

27 year old Devin Cooley is killing it in the AHL while playing for the Wranglers this year. In 12 games played he's tied for first in wins with 9, he has the best Sv% in the league at .953%, and is 2nd in the league with a 1.51 GAA.
My question is... is Cooley a late bloomer or is he just on a hot streak that includes his play in the Flames preseason?

That he was given a two-year deal would seem to indicate the Flames saw something to build on in his lanky 6-5 frame and he certainly seems trending to being the guy you pair Wolf with for 25-26. That would be a fun short guy / tall guy duo.

Frankly as gangly as he is and is limited of a resume in terms of actual starts as he had as a true younger prospect - it seems about right that he’s actually just now coming around at age 27.

If the Flames can't find room for him at the NHL level he'd make an interesting trading chip for the deadline. Somebody must be looking for an injury replacement or playoff insurance.

I think they'd just trade Vladar

Right now, the Wranglers have a few players on their roster who made the Flames out of camp, so they are a pretty stacked squad.

He's a late bloomer on a hot streak.

I think there is a dearth of 3rd string goaltenders. He got a very good contact for what he's accomplished.

Buffalo have him $400k AHL salary last year and that was after a 15 win AHL season. They obviously saw something in him but he ended up being awful in Rochester.

If he's getting that 2nd year on the contract (and one way), you know there was more than one team interested in signing him this season.

They're a good AHL team this year, and it's cool that most of the guys making an impact are drafted or who've been centre pieces in trades that we've made.
The defence of 7 players only has 2 guys that are AHL/Journeymen types you find in the AHL.
Very cool to see Kerins and Pelletier find chemistry in the minors

Flames aren’t getting much for Cooley at the trade deadline unless he shows that he do something useful at the NHL level.

Cooley benefited from being in the Preds system and went from marginal AHL backup to solid AHL starter who got squeezed out in Milwaukee due to Askarov(ironic, I know) But I have my doubts as to whether he can cut it t the NHL level. He got a cup of coffee with San Jose last season and didn't have much to brag about. I wish him well because he was a good Admiral, but ill be shocked if he sticks at the NHL level

Then give the guy some games - he's obviously earned them. He's earned them. Audition the crap out of him and get something decent at the deadline.
Flames are getting great goaltending from Dustin Wolf and good goaltending from Dan Vladar, so it doesn't make sense to call a guy up really

Ya how about we don't force a three goalie rotation on the off chance that we could get a 4th for him at the deadline.

Let him ride for a year, likely need a backup next year anyway

Huh?

You don't just trade everyone away. What exactly do you think the Flames will get for him?
A pick to throw on the pile. Somebody will pay that for depth towards the playoffs. Which is how you run a rebuild.

And they'll be left with two goalies who are more than capable of carrying them down the road to the end of the season. And if one of them is injured there's always waivers.
