Jesse Puljujarvi (50% retained) for Juuso Valimaki.

Flames are searching for a RW, Oilers are looking for a D. Both players could use a change of scenery. @ 50% would make the cap hit the same.

Probably not going to happen because of the teams involved. Nevertheless.. discuss.

The Oilers aren't looking for a D that can't make an NHL roster every day. We have plenty of those. We wouldn't do this even without the retention. Or even if Calgary retained. Valimaki sucks and is no use to Edmonton

Valimaki is a left shot, and while I don't like the deal I wouldn't say he's trash. Been hampered by injury though.
His own coach didn't like him enough to play him much last year.

So would Puljujarvi. Apparently Holland's been trying to trade him for months.
I'm actually being honest. Valimaki's caphit and his QO aren't favorable for a player who isn't an NHLer. He's a prospect that many teams have multiple of. Edmonton included.

Puljujarvi may have been on the market, but Holland was looking for value. If he doesn't find it, Puljujarvi is still an impactful everyday player.

This wouldn't happen because it is a lopsided trade in favor of Calgary. You have to give something to get. No value here for the Oilers.

Sort of a weird trade, in a vacuum it doesn’t make sense for Edmonton; but also with the rumours of Jesse being shopped around the league with no takers, I’m curious to see if he’s moved and for how much.

Analytics guys love the player, but it doesn’t seem like there’s much appetite at home or around the league.

No guarantee he makes it to the Oilers, plus you don't have the cap space.
That doesn’t even make sense, just because offers don’t meet your valuation doesn’t make the player worthless. By the same logic Jakob Chychrun would also clear waivers because the Coyotes have been trying to trade him for a year.

Valimaki wouldn't make the oilers so this only helps the Flames.

We also wouldn't save any money, so it really doesn't help us.
Broberg is probably going to make the Oilers. They have maybe 4 NHL level defensemen. Valimaki is a bust, but he's presently better than Broberg.

Juuso Valimaki would clear waivers.
So would Puljujarvi. More certainly.

Honestly I don't think either player would clear waivers and both sides know it.

I think Valimaki would. I think JP would too. It's the cap squeeze more than anything. Teams just don't have room and are looking to weaponize space if they have it.

Mackey would get claimed in a heartbeat from the Flames, but I'm pretty confident Jusso would clear. Of course Dallas just traded a 1st for a guy who is even worse than Jusso, but I think that was a stupid outlier move and the guy makes entry level money still and is a RHS.

I doubt Valimaki has value. He could go to Europe for a few years and attempt a comeback.

I could however see a Mackey for Pulju deal in theory

No he wouldn't. He could've been traded if Edmonton took a crap offer like a 3rd. He also was ranked 10 best defensive forward in the NHL. I always maintained the Oilers should try him as a defence man. He doesn't think the offensive side of the game fast enough. It may be a confidence issue

As for you Broberg comments I am sure we ( Oiler's fans will have the last laugh on this) Broberg put on 12 pounds in the off season and is struggling a little with it.

I'm pretty sure Valimaki would because of his injury history and performance to date. Puljujarvi probably wouldn't... but only because of his draft pedigree. I'm sure there's at least one GM out there that thinks they can fix him.
The bad new is that he's over paid and there aren't a lot of teams that can afford to add another $3M contract to the roster so that limits the number of GMs who might want to take a chance on him.

It's funny that you think this is true.

There's actual reasoning why Valimaki would and probably will clear waivers if he loses the 7 spot.

Puljujarvi is an established NHL winger with numerous attractive attributes that teams covet. He would most certainly be claimed and is at no risk of being waived.
