In the 2nd deal it clears over 6M in cap space

The Flames can also just buyout Sean Monahan. I don't think that Lucic will be that hard to move either, assuming he waives. He's owed less than $1 million in actual dollars after his signing bonus is paid out next year.

Yeah, but the 2nd deal clears $6M and gets CGY a solid 3C in Toews.

They'll probably want to wait until they know if Zary is himself a solid #3C (or better) before trading him. Players like Pelletier, Zary, and Coronato are not on the table for these kinds of deals. The purpose of these deals is to create cap space. By losing out on cost controlled higher end prospects, you are also losing out on the cap space those players create. 1 year of saving cap space vs. losing out on 6 years of cost controlled Zary. Bad deal.

I don't think that many of you are missing out that Calgary gets a free Toews on this deal, and takes on no extra cap.

There is, of course, no reason why Chicago would do this deal. They are getting anything from it.

Are there some lower end forward prospects that you guys would be willing to give up in a deal like the 2nd one? Hawks have a ton of D prospects(in fact, so many that they're struggling to find playing time for all of the guys who should be in Rockford) and are really thin at forward.

If you would like, I'm also willing to swap one of the Hawks SAH D prospects for Poirier as the Hawks don't have a lot of offensive defensemen in their system.

So Chicago gets a 3rd for Toews?

Not worth it for Chicago. Only way they'd do it is if Toews demands a trade and there's no other options.

 Why would either Lucic or Monahan waive for a known team that's heading into a rebuild? Why would Calgary take on Toews for Lucic and Monaha knowing full well they want to sign both Gaudreau and Tkachuk. And the 2nd trade is even more  Calgary says no to both trade proposals.

It's an intriguing deal for me. I really hate giving up Poirier and Ruzicka though. Both guys have real potential. Ruzicka in particular has a decent likelihood of hitting it. Poirier is kind of a lotto ticket. He could be Kylington 2.0 or he could be Gustafsson. If there was a different prospect besides Ruzicka in it I'd be more likely to say yes.

Ruzicka could be the best player in this deal next year. That's a no from me dog. Rather just buy out Monahan.

I get where the OP is coming from, but the problem is this, Monhan is easily bought out, and there's a good chance you could move Lucic, as he's owed less than $1 million in actual dollars. Toews is totally unmovable.

The Flames can probably get a way with moving both of Monahan and Lucic for a grab bag of lesser assets, giving them the whole $11 million or so in cap space. They don't need to dip into major assets like Zary and Ruzicka to only move $5-6 million in cap.
