Seems like they got a lot of D

Yeah. Don't really understand this one. Unless he's going to be the go to 7th dman and they plan on him eating popcorn for most of the season. They probably didn't want a rookie doing that all season.

Just what we need. More veterans on the blue line taking spots away from the youngsters! :D

Should have just claimed Dahlbeck. He's better and could also help with expansion.

Bleh.

Guess if the reasoning is to give Kulak #1 duties in Stockton and have him first call up from injuries I'm alright with it.

Wotherspoon can sit in the press box as well as anyone though.

But didnt keep Nakladal?

Yeah, that's the only reason I'm sorta meh on this deal. Nakladal reportedly wanted a one-way deal but the Flames wouldn't budge on that, so he left and they went and signed Grossmann... to a one-way deal?

I'd rather have kept Nakladal, at least we know what he is. He was decent enough in his short tenure here anyways.

But didnt keep Nakladal?

Just my theory here, but...

The Flames were waiting for Gaudreau to sign, and had plans to sign Russell. He had been linked to Calgary all summer. As a result, they didn't want to give Nakladal a one way deal, knowing he'd likely be in the AHL if they signed him. Nakladal got his deal from Carolina. Russell wound up getting a good offer from Edmonton. At this point, Calgary lost both as options, so they signed Grossman.

I do think Grossman was just a body for camp initially, but their plans changed.

Just heard an interview from the Flames GM Treliving. He talked about Kulak being in the starting lineup. We wont be keeping 8 dmen.

Interesting in some ways. If Kulak is starting who gets scratched? Engelland, or Wideman.

Sounded like our GM was hinting at a trade happening, and he never hints. So I am probably reading to much into it.

Honestly though in the preseason I thought Grossman looked horrible. Dont really know the player well other than what I was watching. I am a Wotherspoon fan, he looked a tad better than Grossman. Wideman looked better than both of them in my eyes.

Couple of preseasons ago I saw a Kulak Engelland pairing. Kid was younger but thought that pairing looked good together. This camp? Kulak screwed up a few times, cant say I was impressed by his dzone play ( no worse than the others, just not that much better ). Yet his transition, skating, shot, and offensive IQ is head and shoulders above the others. Untapped upside the kid has. A year playing with Gio and Brodie as teammates could be great for this kid.

Kulak needs his shot now, its his time. Not his last chance by no means, yet if he does not run with this its only gonna get harder from here. Barring injuries this is Wotherspoons last hoorah, Kulak will be like Wotherspoon in a year from now if he does not run with this chance.

With Hickey, Andersson, and Kylington on the way his time is now, or possibly never.

Just IMO!

Difference is, someone claims Nak on waivers, but no one will claim Grosssssss

Calgary would have been better off signing Boston-PTO UFA D Christian Ehrhoff.

Atleast Ehrhoff can still play a little, but is slowing down.

Grossmann is even slower and is pretty much shot, he had a terrible season with Arizona.

Oh well Calgary signed him, so his best bet would be to just stay in Calgarys own zone, if he skates out of the D-Zone, he won't be able to make it back against the young fast skaters like McDavid or Larkin.

I can imagine it now, McDavid blowing Grossmann's doors off.

Yuck.

I don't even see the room for it. 8 D?

Giordano - Brodie
Jokkipakka - Hamilton
Kulak - Engelland
Grossman - Wideman

Doesn't sound like they want to send Kulak down, so wtf? Trade in the works?
