CFP realignment coming after Pac12 implosion, etc.

Huge mistake guaranteeing the P5 champions 1-4 seeds.

Last year wasn't a problem, but in 2022, you'd be looking at:
#7 and #9 ranked being seeded 3-4
#3 and #4 ranked being seeded 5-6

You open up a nightmare scenario where a #19 ranked team wins the CCG and gets the 4 seed and undefeated #1 Notre Dame is the five seed.

It’s not P5, it’s the highest ranked conference champions.

#19 is not going to be one of the 4 highest ranked conference champions unless we’re witnessing a season that is truly insane.

The conferences are starting to axe the division format anyways so there’s not going to be a 4-loss team in the CCG unless, again, the season is totally unhinged.
 
With how often title games since the dawn of the Bowl Coalition era in 1992 have matched two Southern teams, I think it would be better if the 12-team CFP is divided along the Mason-Dixon line, with the top 6 teams from outside the South as defined by the US Census Bureau competing for one bid in the title game, and the top 6 teams from the South as defined by the USCB competing for the other

The highest ranked G5 champion would take the place of what would be the sixth-ranked team in one of the regions if they are ranked low enough in the final CFP rankings. If the G5 team is from the MAC, MW, or is Army, New Mexico State or Temple they would be in the part of the bracket with teams from outside the South. If the G5 team is anyone else they would be with the other teams from the South. If the G5 champion happens to be one of the top 6 from one of the regions, then they would not replace another team

This format allows teams in conferences who didn't win their conference as well as independent Notre Dame to earn first-round byes, something which would be prohibited under the 5-7 format.

Face it if Notre Dame is #1 in the final CFP rankings then by all means they should get a first-round bye.

I was considering that as I typed it... You ARE totally right that we're not going to have the "good division/bad division" CCG championship games where like the division champ is the fourth-best team in the conference.

But at the same time, I don't think people are adequately accounting for the fact that with 16 to 18 team conferences, each team is just not playing 40-50% of their league in a season.

It's a very realistic scenario that a team predicted to be a major power when they set the rotation six years ago just isn't and one upset lets a mid-pack team go 7-2 in conference, tied for second and wins the tie-breaker despite everyone considering them the 5th best team in the conference.

Then you're a CCG upset away from a 10-3 team being the 4 seed while a 12-1 team being the 5 seed.

There's NO REASON to open that door in the first place! Just seed them by CFP ranking and give us ONE thing to argue about, not two.
