Cfl 2025

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

The issue isn't with the superstars label or whether they are or not. The issue is quite clearly (or at least I think so) Hervey again running his mouth about specific players in direct contravention of policy. Most pro sports have rules barring this sort of thing as any specific critiques of players of course has repercussion on those players. So that it is up to orgs and of course GM's not to engage in this and Hervey is a serial offender.

The press, and here, people are focusing on strictly whether the superstar tag is accurate. Thats not looking at what the breech actually was.

I don't know if you have to be world wide to be known as a superstar of your league.

However, how many guys in the CFL are even known in Canada or even their City?

CFL like the NHL is pretty bad at promoting their players and their sport though, so I'm not overly shocked at the lack of recognition the best CFL players get. Whether they are superstars or just the best that year.

Hopefully a new commish identifies this as an issue and tries to change this.

IMO there are definitely CFL "superstars," but in the confines of that league only.

There used to be 1-2 of these types for almost any team. Guys that your grandmother could name and were league stars. At the moment I don't think the CFL has a single one of these. Theoretically Rourke if he manages to avoid the post NFL collapse that we are so used to seeing from returning players, but I can't think of another off the top of my head.

Hervey is a fiery guy. We knew this was what and who he is. As long as it doesn't cross the line in extreme fashion, this is what we signed up for when we hired him. To think anything differently would be a bit ignorant. It is what it is.
Sure. We know who he is. Indelibly. Its a sign of failure of an org that it doubles back to a guy that it fired just within the same decade. An org that went the same path with Jones, that failed entirely, and are now doing it again thinking throwing back old names is going to bring back some kind of magic. Doesn't it look like desperation?

Like I said earlier why is CFL so invested in retreads and in teams reworking the same coaches, managers they fired. If the org thought this way in the past Ray Jauch and Hugh Campbell would never have been here to resurrect the franchise and turn it into something great. Appears to me that the recycling of same olds is perhaps due to absence of new ideas and recruiting new people at the helm. Why is that? Probably because this org doesn't scout Football minds any more than it does players in present time.

Okay Mr. Drive, we get it. You're obviously not and never have been an Ed Hervey guy. You're fed up with the EE and the CFL too. Grind that axe, man.

In my opinion, Ed Hervey is the right man for the Elks' GM job at this time - warts and all. His passion level for the EE organization is what owner Larry Thompson and team President Chris Morris were desperately looking for after the recent disastrous seasons. Retread or not, prickly/mouthy or not, they believe that the green & gold bleeding Hervey gives their team the best chance to turn things around on the field quickly. Many fans (like me & those on my season ticket account) strongly believe it could work. You & some others do not. I'll check back with you sometime after Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day or Grey Cup Day and we'll see who was right.

Incorrect. At one time I was a fan o Hervey, Jones, and I was a big fan of that team and Mike Reilly and going to a lot of games. The franchise sunk however after that and quickly after that with Jones being nabbed by the Riders and the team hadn't been much since.

I like Thompson and Morris but I think this retreading of Hervey was a mistake. As the reintroduction of Jones showed time can erase the effectiveness of all. Hervey hadn't really established success away from here so its kind of a mysterious hire. Just seems like the org trying to go back to the past and find gold. Hervey seems to be making the same sort of mistakes.

"Green and gold Bleeding Hervey" The guy that admonished fans right during the Grey Cup rally at Churchill SQ. I was there. Jones sitting there celebrating and he'd already made the decision to move, Hervey stating the fans are way too critical here, lol, during a Grey Cup celebration. Lets just say it was awkward. The players were nice and appreciative though.

Like any sport and whether it's coach or GM, no matter who is hired there are always people that bitch that it's a retread or if it's a new guy.

I have no idea if the EE are going to turn it around this year, but they 100% turned around the perception in the City of Edmonton surrounding this club. Alumni/fans/media all pumping the tires of the EE way more than I've seen in years here.

Not exactly a deep hiring pool these days either. Pretty much picking from 9 front offices which are full of guys who’ve just cycled throughout the CFL or you’re looking at U sports programs.

With the expansion of front office operations in the NFL as well as the college football landscape in the US, very few coaches and executives are coming north to these days to try their hand at 3 down football when there’s so many options in the US.

Pick a guy who’s been around and the know-it-alls complain about retreads, pick a new guy and they complain how he doesn’t have any experience.

Let's turn the spotlight today on 2 rookies who had outstanding seasons in 2024.

We know about LB Nick Anderson (CFL rookie of the year) and rookie RB Justin Rankin but 2 first year players who were also exceptional were DBs Devodric Bynum and Kordell Jackson.

Dev Bynum, as a rookie corner, started to emerge as a ballhawk and had 5 interceptions. He's only 25 years of age--an age where DBs start to emerge. Most games I watched (and that was all of them) he was very good at breaking up plays. He's also fairly big for a DB at 195 lbs. If he makes the club then he and Tyrell Ford (maybe the best ball hawk in the league) will make solid bookends at the corner spots. Playing corner is perhaps the most high pressure spot on the team.

Kordell Jackson started most of the games at halfback and also played safety. He's versatile and as a CFL rookie last year, was only 25 years of age. He went from being an all-star in the indoor football league in 2023 to being solid and dependable on a much, much larger field called Commonwealth Stadium.

They could both solidify their spots this season but the level of competition for roster spots in the Defensive backfield will be greatly elevated. They will have to play well to make the club. There are no less than 19 players listed as defensive backs on the current roster. Out of quantity comes quality.

Wow, people are worked up over some people's interpretation of the term "superstar", lol. This is a league that can't draw flies, is only sustained by TV contracts, is used as a feeder league, no player identification on a team due to short term contracts, and can't even institue a 20th century app and website. And they're up in arms over a "war of words" over interpretation of a word, and some fans are getting worked up and setting their hair on fire. Only in the CFL, you say, lol.

I'm sure half the Riders' roster would be easily recognized if they were walking around a Regina Walmart but I don't think anyone in the CFL could be considered a 'superstar'. If they were they'd be in the NFL.

How many hockey superstars are not in the NHL? Unless Jagr is still playing in some league, but I don't think there's a Jagr currently in the CFL

Yep just protecting IP… certainly nothing to see here. They couldn’t even change the name if they wanted to… yet. But maybe it does seem a little strange, the minimizing of the Elks brand and the big push to the EE since new ownership took over and now a little nugget like this.

If I knew Larry Thompson, which I definitely for sure don’t. I’d say the guy loooves the Edmonton Eskimos and he’s has more money than he can spend and more than enough that he can do whatever he wants with his football team without having to care about what anyone, including corporate sponsors, think.
