I am not a big soccer/footy fan so I will defer to the experts with a question. What purpose does changing the kits every year serve other than a cash grab? Logic would suggest that if you are looking to build a fanbase, the most important thing would be brand identification, meaning the guy on the street seeing a shirt on someone and immediately knowing what the jersey is. You see a Habs jersey and know it is the Montreal Canadiens, sure there have been other special ones but the regular one is a constant. I even will go as far as suggesting it is a slap in the face to your most loyal fans, asking them to purchase a new one each year. Can't see the how seeing a crowd at Saputo stadium on TV with people wearing 5 different jerseys instead of all decked out in one official one aids in building the brand

A lot of it is really just money related. That and the team has been in almost constant rebrand mode for the past like 5 years, they're still searching for the right ''fit''. Add an owner who's notoriously prone to giant mood swings.

It is a cash grab. But where I disagree is when you say it doesn't help build a brand. The jerseys still have some familiarity and that does help build the brand. They use the same color scheme. The stripes have been use a bunch of years since they joined MLS. What happened is the rebranding missed the mark so now they're back to what they did well in the 2010s.

The Habs also have had a bunch of different third jerseys over the years, though it's true they do a better job at keeping some uniformity (even in the reverse retro or Winter Classic jerseys).
