I would have easily taken if the Caps had moved onto the ECF and even got swept! Do you not look at their history and see they have only made it past the 2nd round 3 times('90, '98, and '18) in their long playoff history?! Caps must have one of worst playoff histories advancing to the 2nd half of the playoffs!
Take a walk and cool off brother. You will feel better, I promise.

The book on our game came together around the 3/4 mark of the season and teams figured us out. The way we played in the playoffs wasn't really surprising. We'd been trending the wrong direction for quite awhile and it was never righted. Need to reduce ice time for some guys next year and dump all the dead weight from this roster that isn't under contract next season.
This is part of it… agreed.

But also, wonky ride to be so far ahead and chasing 895. Lot of emotions and then Fell off game and didn’t get it back.

And, Protas (not fully healthy) and Fever out are big holes to fill. Thought Protas had his best game of the playoffs tonight. He was everywhere. Fully healthy from start impacts things a lot.

Hockey is cruel. Do things well all year and then just can’t click. Run into a hot goaltender. Opportunity conversion.

Is it safe in here yet?

We lost to a better team that was able to impose its play style (which is a bad matchup for us). It happens. We also had a lot of guys who had never been in that position before. The players and Carbs will hopefully learn from it.

The Caps had an amazing 50th Anniversary Season. Ovi reached the mountain top. The team almost won the PT - something most us wouldn’t have considered possible after last season. It was a fun journey, and as always - I enjoyed watching the games with the fellow crazies in this thread. Peace! ✌️

It's sports. When it looks bleak look at other franchises. Some haven't even made it to the finals. The Patrick was a tough division and so is the current metro. In the Southleast they had to deal with Tampa and post cup Carolina. I mean we could be the old Winnipeg/Arizona franchise. Just enjoy the summer off and be ready for camp. I can assure you the players will move on. I can deal with losing in the second round than make it to the ECF for straight seasons and losing. I have to give it to Edmonton. They are on a mission to want the cup or else despite weaknesses which is what every franchise should focus on over President Trophies, banners, and regular season success.

Agreed. It was an epic year. Looking forward to watching the youth movement continue to grow next year

After watching the Vegas game I thought “I can see the caps doing that” and it happened. Two bad goals in a 2-1 game, and no offense in a do or die. I will say it again, the top 6 C is what needs upgraded. We got nothing from those two and our offense was sad. Let PLD fix the 3C spot.

On a bright side a second round loss is way above last year and what I was expecting pre-season. We are set up well to continue the post Ovie transition and I’m excited for the future.
You don't put an $8.5 million per year Center as your 3C! PLD set a career high in points(66) and his +-(+27) was career high as well(in fact his +27 far exceeded his total +4 over his previous 8 seasons!) in a season. Personally, I think he will be even better next season! The Caps need to have more speed/shoot first players added to their lineup. Strome/PLD will be fine as your 1/2 or 2/1 C's in your top 6. Strome has made adjustments, but I think him continued to center OV handcuffs him a bit. PLD with Protas/Wilson showed a lot of success, so I would try to roll those 3 together next season.

Oilers have good team speed and an explosive offense, including their PP. All they have to do is find a way to collectively play good enough team defense and get timely goaltending.

While he wasn’t bad I wouldn’t call him hot. I honestly think our lack of high danger scoring chances made his job easier. I don’t feel like we got Halaked.

Who cares what his cap hit is, that should have no baring on building the lineup. We won a cup with 19/92 playing like top line centers. We don’t have that right now on the team. Both strome and PLD have been pleasant suprise reclamation projects. Glad to have them on the team and they aren’t horrible players. But if we want to move on from a second round and out level team we need better down the middle.

Solid effort, propably deserved more than 1 win here but why prolong it? They couldn’t solve Andersen or bury their chances so they were never even close to moving on here. Same old, same old.

End of an era when it's elimination game and 8 and 74 are your worst players. In the 2nd period Carbery was so scared to put 8 and 17 against Staal line that he rather put the 3rd line against them on a D zone draw.

Saying Ovi was one of our worst players is laughable. He struggled at times tonight, sure, he's 39 and probably playing through some kind of injury, but he was putting opportunities together. Carlson was atrocious all playoffs long though, I cannot wait for him to be gone.

Sandin had a particularly awful round as well, we really felt the loss of Marty. On the other hand, Roy was a really awesome development for us this season - between him, Chyc, and Marty we really have a solid three defensemen to build around. I honestly think that AA will get better, this series was just a terrible matchup for his size and style of play, and TVR is solid when not having to cover for gaffs

I wouldn't point fingers on any of our players at all.

Yeah, it sucks to lose an elimination game on a soft tie-breaker goal late in the 3rd, and you'd want highly paid players to produce more, but... From what I watched, there wasn't a single game component or position we had an advantage over Canes. Team-wide, we had neither a game plan as an answer to Carolina's, nor the
skill to simply outplay them, let alone the intensity to outhustle those deficiencies. They were better and sharper.

You know what is puzzling to me to this day, how the Caps keep reinventing ways to lose in the 2nd round! I forget the number of years we have made the playoffs since we started? ONLY 3 TIMES IN OUR PLAYOFF HISTORY HAVE WE BEEN ABLE TO ADVANCE PAST THE 2ND ROUND! I have lost track how many times we have lost a Game 7 in the 2nd round?!

Well ownership, the GM and Carbs are not gonna listen to you! PLD is staying in our top 6! Besides CMM will be our 3C, just as the draft scouts projected him to be!

Given how things fell apart late the regular season, I don’t think anyone should be too surprised by this. Part of having success in the playoffs is about guys finding an extra gear at just the right time. Remember even during the Cup run, we weren’t a great team for a lot of that season, and strung together some really solid wins (under Grubauer) to end the RS which helped catapult guys in the playoffs.

For me, the biggest issues this time around were the complete absence of a functioning third line - Leonard will be a good player, but he reminds me of CMM under Laviolette. Has the tools, but still needs to figure out how to quite use them at the NHL level. Eller was hopeless, and we probably needed someone with a better scoring acumen and size than Mangiapane there. A third line that can do real damage, and a fourth line that can make life difficult for the other side, relieves a lot of pressure from the top 6. Strome and Dubois can be at least as good as Backstrom and Kuzy were in 2018, but to do that they need someone capable of challenging for 2C at 3C (as Eller was, just about, then).

I think we move on from Alexeyev. He reminds me of Bowey a little - on paper should bring the right attributes, but doesn’t do anything especially well while having some defensive woes. He’s not that young, or inexperienced, now either.

And the forwards need to get better at screening the goalie and going for deflections. Anderson had clear sight lines almost the entire series.

Shame. I think there was room to do better.
We missed Marty too much

With the elimination at least we won't the see the so called "fans" I would even say "PO fans" or "PO winning fans" posting here.
Sh**ing on the players that a month ago and during the whole season were great and now are crap.
