Harris gone and Christiansen sits seems like the easy answer
So it looks like Provorov is sticking around. Atleast for this season.

What happends when Gudbranson comes back? Our only defenceman who doesnt need waivers is Mateychuk. Maybe Harris trade or waivers?

After the trade deadline don’t we have expanded rosters and we are nowhere near the salary cap. So we don’t make any moves if Gudbranson comes back after the trade deadline.

That is correct as long as your compliant on your cap you can have expanded rosters. We might see a player or two get paper transactioned to Cleveland to be eligible for a Calder Cup run but other than that we will be good.

So are we looking at for full strenght?:
Z-Fabbro
Mateychuk-Provorov
Gudbranson-Severson

Perhaps but I'm having a headache trying to form D-pairs that include Gudbranson.
pretty straightforward if they don't care about handedness:

werenski - fabbro
mateychuk - provorov
severson - gudbranson

if they do care:
werenski - fabbro
provorov - gudbranson
mateychuk - severson
the issue here (and the source of your headache) is that the fit doesn't look great:
  1. evason doesn't trust severson to play above the third pair
  2. severson's best tool is his rush defense, but putting him on his unnatural side weakens that tool
  3. gudbranson isn't skilled enough to play his unnatural side
  4. provorov historically hasn't had much success with gudbranson or severson
  5. mateychuk has earned a big role
kinda wonder if they're maybe laying the groundwork to move severson. seth jones at $7m fetched a good young goalie and a future first rounder, severson likely has some value if he's open to being traded.

I've floated this before, but a severson-soucy swap seems to make sense. he'd be a good fit with marcus pettersson, and the jackets would get a piece that better fits their roster in soucy.

The handedness situation may force Evason out of his comfort zone. And that could work out for the best.

Mateychuk - Provorov has not been a great pairing. Even on goals results but when a pairing is around 40% xG, that's where I have to wonder who they might fit better with. I'm sure folks have noticed them getting hemmed in a lot?

Severson hasn't been great in xG% since his return, at 46%, but he's been on for 16 GF and only 7 GA since then. By my reckon he's been making fewer mistakes than either Mateychuk or Provorov. Mateychuk - Severson might work out well.

the two issues with this are that:
  1. evason's profound lack of trust in severson means that this functionally relegates mateychuk to the third pair
  2. as a result, the de facto second pair is provorov-gudbranson, two players who have not performed well together, and they would be thrust into a big-minute shutdown role as a result
if that's how the chips fall, there's no sense in keeping provorov if they're going to deploy him in a fashion that doesn't align to his skillset. and if evason does treat the mateychuk-severson pair as a second pair, then there's no sense in keeping provorov if he's going to play third pair minutes.

Is it more aligned to Provorov's skillset to play him on the right side on a pairing that's getting hemmed in at 40% xG?

Waddell's quote "Provorov is also our best shutdown defenceman" made me chuckle a bit.

It may be true but it also tells us that we actually dont have a shutdown defenceman...

A true shutdown pair to that team would go extremely hard!

mateychuk seems to be getting a lot more comfortable at the NHL level, so I wouldn't be surprised if those results start to turn around a bit. and provorov did play very well with werenski earlier this year.

my point, though, is that the paths forward with provorov on the roster seem to be:
  1. status quo (keeping him with mateychuk + having a 78-44 third pair that feels icky on paper)
  2. trying to use him + gudbranson (or severson) as a big-minute shutdown pair (seems doomed)
  3. bumping him down to the third pair
if it's #3, the usage belies the opportunity cost (a 1st round pick via trade) – they could even double dip by going after someone like soucy to backfill his spot.

if it's #2, well, I'm skeptical that he'd look any better in those situations than he does with mateychuk.

the other option, I suppose, is blowing up the top pair if they really trust mateychuk. seems like werenski-provorov / mateychuk-fabbro could still work, although then you'd still have the problem outlined in #1 with the third pair.

I am guessing the Olivier extension gets announced before the TBL game on Tuesday. That would be one chip to fall. I'm interesting in the move up front. That will say a lot about the potential availability of Monahan and Sillinger down the stretch.

hot take: monahan has chemistry with everyone so I'd keep fantilli at 1C and then let monahan carry a second line with KJ and one of chinny/jenner.
I've been thinking the exact same. A 38-23-91 line could be nasty. That has a little bit of everything.

I think Chinny is gonna be a good third liner with #1 PP duties.
