Help me out.. stat watching but it seems like Jiricek has been absolute trash? Am I close here? Is he in lineup to start or will he be a healthy scratch?

Why? Not being a jerk about it but I don't get it. What does ZAR offer us other than a warm body?

You look through our forward ranks and you see player after player who don't belong on the ice in a defensive shift. And a lot of guys who will struggle to be in the right position to cover for each other.

We had several of our own young players that fit that category and the two players we signed, JVR and Labanc, have been known for poor defense. Last year JVR had okay D results but Labanc has been putrid.

By the practice lines Jiricek looks to be a spare to start.

Yes he had a rough pre-season. On top of the normal mistakes he just seemed to have little confidence and did little with the puck.

We've had a healthy debate about whether he should be in the AHL.

On a serious note though, whenever Jiricek is playing confidently and aggressive, he does a good job of titling the ice offensively and making things happen. I just don't think he does it consistently enough to warrant an NHL role yet unless we're really using him a a PP specialist, which still is a questionable reason to have him up.

ZAR has to be on the 4th line so does Malatesta move up to 3rd line or down to AHL. My guess it’s the latter.

I obviously want him in NHL... But it appears to be going poorly... Very poorly. He sounds completely lost.

For the most part, he's been rough since drafted when at the NHL level. Needs to get stronger and continue to improve his skating. Looks like the worst skater on the team to me. Has a nice skill set but he's a long way from being a good NHL player. Hoping he can show some improvement this year, but he'll start in the press box.

This seems to be a very consistent message.lol. I was hoping for a tremendous offseason focused on skating and putting in muscle... Not sure that happened.lol

Why doesn't he play defense then?

I don't know if he can skate backwards.

Defense is keeping the puck out of your net, and the best way to do that is to keep the puck in the offensive zone. JFresh (a Pens die-hard) says that ZAR was the best defensive forward in the league because he kept the puck in the offensive zone with a suffocating forecheck.

I don't know ZAR from watching him but if he can give us Riley Nash type results that would make Evason's job much easier.
