Jenner didn't exactly impress during today's exhibition.

To sort of follow up on the exhibition games so far....

Reilly ended up playing a pretty good game overall against the Swedes, he makes blunders in his own zone too much still though, like the Finn's first goal this morning. Definitely a kid to keep an eye on the next couple of years at Minnesota.

First time I've caught Korpisalo playing, so far I'm really really impressed. I think out of all our prospects in this tournament he has the best chance of a "coming out" party, especially with Dansk looking like the third stringer.

I wonder how many jackets scouts or even if Davidson and howson are across the pond watching the wjc prelims. The fins are looking really good and they have a buncha talent gonna be spread throughout the first round.

Sounds like Reilly played himself out of the bubble and off the team today.

I wonder if Reilly might have been better served last season playing in the USHL or on a team that wasn't so ridiculously better than the competition. (The Penticton Vees went on like a 32 game winning streak). He put up insane numbers and got a lot of experience offensively, but he needs a lot of work in his own zone. He'll get coaching in the NCAA, but he's not seeing a lot of 5 on 5 ice time as a freshman at Minnesota. Some times defensemen need the on-ice experience more than anything.

Jenner just ran somebody and picked up a major. Looked like a suspension worthy hit to me. I'm not sure if the IIHF weighs prior actions as heavily as the NHL, but if you'll remember, he got got a one game suspension for spearing somebody at last years WJC.

Edit: Video of the hit.

I like Jenner's aggressiveness and physical play, but he knows better, he just can't resist the temptation to drill somebody. At some point, he'll figure it out, hopefully before he plays for the CBJ.

It's his game to play physical ... that's why he is on the team. It's a split second judgment hit, one that can go either way. Remember this hit last year? Very similar hit. Didn't this one go unpenalized?

I don't mind him playing physical, but as seems to be the popular comment so far: physical and reckless are two different things. Hope the Swedish kid is okay.

Not disagreeing with you Sore. Yeah that one went unpenalized. There is no reference as to where the puck was in relation to the lateness of the the hit on Maata. He was clearly late on this mornings hit and he knows being watched by IIHF refs, that gets called all day long. The one game suspension from last years stick tap was ticky tack, at least in North American standards.

Late hit (injury), Europe, get the book thrown.

Impossible to tell on that clip you showed. No reference point.

I'm not sure why Jenner decides he wants to do a Matt Cooke/Raffi Torres impersonation at these WJCs because by most accounts, he doesn't play nearly this dirty in juniors.

The hit wasn't that bad Sore... it was about .5 seconds late and was straight on.

It wasn't a headshot and the kid was admiring his own pass. Here in North America that would have been a 5 minute major MAYBE.

Blue Jackets karma at work:

Murray is injured
Jenner will be suspended
Reilly "played himself out"
Dansk is gonna watch tournment from the stands

Korpisalo is the only CBJ prospect at the WJC. Something probably is gonna happen to him over the next week.

I really have to agree with this. Sure, it was a bit late, but "keep your head up" is good advice more often than not. It's a rough game, and had Jenner been there earlier it would have been 100% clean.

The thing is, these European kids from Sweden and Finland aren't used to so physical game from the NA sides. It's not like there's no hitting in European leagues, but the big ice reduces the ammount of big open ice collisions quite a lot, because there's no time to do these and if you commit to one, you better get it right otherwise you give the opposition the advantage by missing the hit.
Because of this, "keep your head up" isn't stressed as much as in NA. Also keeping in mind it was a late hit, he didn't really expect to get hit there so I don't think the Swede is to blame here.

I'd give Jenner 1 or 2 games just as reminder to learn to let go sometimes, when you know you can't finnish your hit on time and the opponent isn't aware. There's really no need to hit the unsuspecting player in a friendly match. Good for Jenner to make the contact itself clean, you could have easily made a hit to the head there. If the Swede doesn't get injured it's just 2 minutes, but Petterson did this time, and that's major in Europe.

Injury at warmup? Eats poisonous Christmas food?

Fair enough, thanks for the input. I wouldn't be terribly upset if he got suspended for 1 or 2 considering the circumstances, anything more would be excessive. If/when he reaches the NHL though, this type of play should hardly stir any controversy. Charging penalty, at MOST a major.

I know you're mainly joking with this, but we have Sedlak for the Czechs as well, who could be playing a big role on his team.

Not a huge fan of Boone's hit especially since it keeps happening, but it was clean, just maybe a half second or so late. He should know better by this point.

The question I beg is, had the Swedish kid not been so obviously injured on the play, and had skated to the bench as Maatta had after the check last year, would the penalty have been as severe? I watched last year's hit so closely, so many times. I won't argue that the hit today was late, because it absolutely was ... I agree with all of you there.

One thing I'll mention is that Boone Jenner isn't on the team to do what he does in junior. With Oshawa, he's counted on to be a leader, plays on the powerplay, and is their top line presence. With Team Canada, he's a depth/role player, likely to spend much of his ice time on the third and fourth lines, expected to kill penalties and provide a physical presence. This will likely be his role in the NHL if/when he gets there, so this is the kind of play we should all expect to see from him. Hopefully not quite this reckless though ;)

Jenner, Team Canada defending hit...

http://www.tsn.ca/world_jrs/story/?id=412131

Interesting tactic by Steve Spott:

"We know the standards are different over here," said Spott, also the head coach and general manager of the OHL's Kitchener Rangers. "Our players are prepared, but ultimately, in the first two games, I think, as a hockey person, not as Team Canada's head coach, as a hockey person, I don't think anyone can argue that the level of officiating in the first two games for all the teams has not been at the level that we're probably used to and should expect."

Personally, I've never been a fan of calling the officials out, especially when one of your players is potentially facing supplemental discipline ...

Don't forget about winning faceoffs! They were mentioning Jenner a lot this morning with all the penalties Canada was taking and he was getting a lot praise his pk and faceoffs which is perfect for the role in cbj he could play. Seeing how it looks like we're going to be a D first team he has the perfect gritty, defensive minded scoring the jackets need.

I dunno thats pretty close to a clean hit. Not even late really. No charge. At least half the impact is on the swede...doesnt leave his feet. Arms LOOK like theyre more than low enough. The video makes it seem worse the way they freeze it n Mackenzies talking about too many digital frames after the puck leavin his stick. Just canada again with the respect issue towards our prospects.

That karma thing has got to go:

Murray got hurt but will be fine and is a top pair defense prospect.
Jenner made a late hit but plays with grit and is a 3/2 C.
Reilly can't play defense right now but he can really skate, pass and shoot.
Dansk has been lit up and taken a lot of pucks but has a .904 save %
And Korpisalo's positional play was impressive today. Mason should take note.

Add Johansen, CAM, JAM, our defensive depth, the other tweeners in Springfield and elsewhere and a very important draft next year and no matter what happens at this years tournament the CBJ look to have some pretty interesting prospect depth.
