Add the season ending hip surgery factor into this and I’m beyond shocked.

I figured some other team would sign him, because it takes forever for a goalie’s reputation to die in this league, but Columbus out-dummied everybody else before anyone else could even get a chance.
Looks like Tarasov insurance.

Guessing they won't mind burying him if Tarasov emerges.

HUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He has been bad for 1987 too years in a row, and has 4 seasons of sub .900 goaltending. What does this guy have on CBJ that they keep bringing him back? Wings fans would have been furious if Jimmy Howard got resigned a few seasons ago, and he only had 1 terrible season after having been decent most of his career!

Well, he still has those bubble playoffs to point to I guess. I mean 1,3mil for 1 year, who cares? Not going to be an issue for the Jackets.

How about getting goaltending, going to be an issue for the Jackets.

Korpisalo is neither going to make it or break it for the Jackets.

Jesus f***ing christ, we are talking about signing a backup/3rd string goalie for 1y on 1.3 million. On a team that is not expected to compete.

This signing is very much a repayment of being a good soldier. Sat behind Bob for years and didn’t fuss once. Had his job taken by Elvis and maintained his good attitude.

Things haven’t gone well for him for two years now. This past year the jackets were a mess defensively. No goalie would have succeeded under our defense. He’s better than his stats show, even if he’s injury prone.

I hope korpi rebounds. If not, he’ll be off to Europe after this year

No need to take the Lord's name in vain! Also, what other goalies have these kind of numbers that are even getting NHL jobs, let alone more than minimum to do so?

Not for more than NHL minimum, but did you see someone gave Carter Hutton a contract last summer?

And someone will sign Jonas Johansson again this summer!

Korpi obviously played terribly this year, the club is betting that his hip problem was at fault and that he is primed for a rebound.

I think that's probably right as far as his physique. He's a technically very capable goalie. But I think with the mental part of the game he'd be better off with a fresh start elsewhere. Same with the Jackets, a fresh backup in there.
His former coach seemed to indicate that his problem was between the ears.

Korpisalo is literally the worst goalie in the league going back to 16-17.

And the other goalies there (Bob and Elvis) have managed to significantly outplay him and have had at least a league average save percentage every year since then. So there’s no argument whatsoever that this is a team symptom.

That’s an .897% in 151 games played. That’s all of his career minus his first 31 games in the league of .920% as a rookie. Nobody else has survived an .897% over the last 6 years and even stayed in the league.

At this point where he’s now UFA eligible, there’s entirely no reason whatsoever to bring him back. This is like a woman that badly needs to get away from her husband/boyfriend and finally gets her own place, then invites him over to stay the first night she’s moved in

This has to be the worst metaphor I have read on this site.

Comparing Korpi and Anton Forsberg’s careers is pretty interesting. Both were drafted by the Jackets. It seems like when one is up, the other is down.

Forsberg was the better AHL goalie and was the goalie for the Lake Erie Monsters’ Calder Cup run. But when they would be called up to the Jackets, Korpi outplayed Forsberg.

Forsberg was traded to Chicago as part of the Panarin trade. And then in 2017-18 Forsberg outplayed Korpi.

Korpi outplayed Forsberg for the next few years. Forsberg was an AHLer while Korpi shined against the Leafs in the playoffs.

Now Forsberg looks like the better goalie again. He has been surprisingly good for the Senators while Korpi’s numbers have been pretty bad.
